Ace, 8 is soft 19, same deal, double down, it is only ever going to be 9, never 19 if you hit the 2.

So if the ace is one of your two initial cards, and you double down, then it is only counted as a 1. Both in pontoon and Blackjack.

Whatever card you pick up next is played as is if it doesn't bust you.

firstly, why the hell would want to double down when you have 20 already?

secondly, in adelaide at least, you are only allowed to double down on 9, 10 or 11

Actually benny the cunt in pontoon there may be times when you wish to double down on a ten/twenty. But I won't go into those as it is all about inappropriate game strategy.

And SkyCity does provide Black Jack and Pontoon - they are two very similar and yet different games.

Pontoon has all of the Tens removed from the shoe, BJ Pays immediately as does 21. in Blackjack you still compete against the dealer if they are showing a face card or an Ace.
You can double down on any hand combo in Pontoon whilst in Blackjack you can only do this with a 9/10/11 showing.

Is this a Casino thing to change the odd's?

My understanding of playing pontoon in my Military day was this

"Pontoon can be played by any number of players from two upwards - it works well with 5 to 8 players - using a standard 52 card pack. For a large number of players, say 8 or more, two 52 packs can be mixed together. The players also need a supply of money or chips for betting.

The cards have values: ace is worth 1 or 11 at the holder's choice, kings, queens, jacks and tens are worth ten, and the remaining cards are worth their pip value. Each player's basic aim is to form a hand whose total value is as near as possible to 21, without going above 21."
from Wiki

After looking at another wiki page thid explains it better,

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pontoon_(game)
42.7 percent of all statistics are made up on the spot.

Correct here, pontoon has a higher house advantage that blackjack. Hence why Adelaide Casino replaced all of the $5 blackjack tables with pontoon tables, so the small time players with $20 lose their money quicker....

But they also pay out any 21, as well as bonus payouts on 6,7,8 7,7,7, 5 card 21 6 card 21 and 7 card 21.
