See, i'm a fan of doing that sometimes. Just to see if i can extract more chips and if it bites me in the bum then that's just my tough luck. 98% of the time i'll raise though.

Reasoning behind this decision?

I don't see the value in raising. It's a tough six-max game - any raise in this spot is only being called by hands that beat you, IMO. Hands that are weaker, will fold. So where's the value of the raise?

edit: Look at the hand in the context it's been presented - it's not a case of what you always do, or do in tournament play. This is a specific example.

Well, you want me on your table, because, I can lay down the $14 I put in the pot, and I would fold.

The d0nk in BB could have easily called me with hands that have me beat: J10 or KQ or K7 or Q7.

Answer:

Call. Raising is everyone's gut reaction, but why? You should always have a reason to raise - either to get more money in the pot from a worse hand or to get your opponent to fold. In this hand, you aren't looking for a fold and if you raise, you won't get value out of any hand you beat. If you raise, your opponent will fold everything you're ahead of and continue with hands you lose to. By flat-calling, you keep in hands that you beat and that he'll continue on the turn with. Thus you maximize your EV.

Raise (48%) Fold (2%) Call (50%)

I absolutely DO want them to fold because I don't want their likely Kx or Qx to improve, especially if they are any good as a player.

If you're feeling brave, go ahead and flat call but I wouldn't given that example on that table (some of us did actually manage to read that bit the first time Scott :P )
Pardon me, but I think you'll find that's a shovel. See you next Tuesday!

Raising might scare someone away if that's your intention, but you won't make any extra that way.

Scene

Blinds: $1/$2

Everyone has $200 in this scenario.

In the fourth installment of our series on c-bets, you’re playing in a tight-aggressive six-max game online. Under the gun limps and you raise on the button to $9 with [ks] [qs]. The small blind folds, the big blind calls and the limper calls. The flop comes [9c] [10s] [6s]. Both of your opponents check. What should you do?
