Betting to Isolate

Postby JT » Tue May 20, 2008 12:02 am

Had a very funny one tonight !!!

I raised an over the top bet to make sure that to limp betters didnt get to see the next card ( whom I saw as theats ) - and in the same time kept in some one in the game who was all in whom I didnt see was a threat !!

The all in won and the 2 that folded had to tell me how I should bet - so in a nut shell the 2 threats didnt chip up.

Am I wrong for pushing ???

I finished in front of the 2 would be wingers by the way

They were probably upset about you betting into a dry side pot

Unless this was a different hand to the one I saw.

All in went for about 1100, 3 people just called. No side pot.

Flop was 6 6 6

JT went all in for 3300 as first to act. Players folded.

JT shows 3 4. Mary turns over A9, and the ace holds up.

My understanding is that JT was betting into a dry side pot. One of the other players had AK, so would've won and knocked out Mary.

That is why the players were angry, because it gave someone a life in the tournament (not because they lost the hand).

If that's the case, no wonder they were pissed. It's one thing betting into a dry side pot with a hand, but there's no point bluffing the dry side pot.

my opinion is yes, you were wrong for pushing, because it was a complete bluff.

see the link below for discussion on dry side pots

I believe it was wrong to push.

The whole point of tournaments is to eliminate players, if someone raises over the top it gives the short stack a 50/50 chance of winning. If there a two more live players the odds stack against the short stack, therefore giving you a better chance to finish higher in the tournament, as we want the short stacks out, and not given another chance to progress.

The players weren't exactly pissed, they couldn't understand the bluff. I know Air would've just checked the hand down if there was no bet.

And if it was so push a threat out of the hand (and so they didn't get the chips), well that is a different story.

Same happened with my KK. A7 was all in pre-flop, me & another in. Board came out A7389 ... If I have had bet on the flop, then I would've pushed out TD Mark, who won the hand with J 10... The all-in A7 was less of a threat that Mark, and I would've preferred he got the chips, but I checked it down, thinking I didn't want to lose more money in case Mark had the Ace.. On that hand, either way I was losing, but it's where the chips ended up that mattered. But I didn't think my KK was the best hand, so I didn't bet.

I guess it was written poorly then, he said he raised an over the top bet, implies there's no sidepot.
