if the pot is small, i try to not worry about it.

although complete bluffs to take down the side pot in this case are not good for the table image, as you have to show it :D

I tend to pull back on getting tricky once the main pot is locked for this reason.

When it comes down to it, you have a stack in front of you to use. If you have a big stack, you can use it.

Why should you play like you have same stack as the short stack?

NPL Tourney - 15 players get points

18 people left... short stack goes all in, 2 callers

see a flop, dry side pot

1 of the callers bets out... the other guy folds having hit bottom pair, thus making it heads up, the bet was a complete bluff, just wanting the chips, but the all in has ace high and wins and thus stays in the tournament. Could have checked it down and moved one step closer to the points

the idea of checking down a dry side pot (unless you have the nuts - i.e. top pair with good kicker or better) is that there's a better chance of taking out a player and thus getting closer to the points.

Bluffing a dry side pot is completely useless, as generally the all-in person will win

so does anyone know where the whole 'it's etiquette' thing regarding this comes from?

I'm happy with the pros and cons of betting/bluffing/not betting in this situation. I want to know why some ppl think you should check it 'because it's the right thing to do'.
Pardon me, but I think you'll find that's a shovel. See you next Tuesday!

It's more "check if you dont have the winning hand"

i.e. dont be a douche and bluff, because it doesnt help anyone unless you hit running cards

Exactly.

But as Scott said, it's situation dependent.
What you described is right, and most people would do that.
BUT, checking down a dry side pot isn't always the best thing to do.

as des said, you are giving the person thats all in more chance to lose by checking it down, so its not really etiquette for the person all in is it.

Checking it down also gives yourself more chance to lose because you're giving the other live bettor free looks at cards. Better for you to only have to beat one other player.
