the reason ponting and hayden got so little was because australia is scheduled to tour pakistan in the middle of the ICL tournament, and so will be unavailable for most of it - thats if it goes ahead anyway, they have had some assassinations lately.

symonds got so much because -
1.he is the best one day player in the world
2.he has flatly refused to tour Pakistan, even if australia go. this means he is abailable for the whole tourney

Bout as much as I can work out so far is that there's some teams (in India?) that are having their own league and held an auction for some big name players to stick in their sides. So where are the rest of the players in each team coming from?

Who are the teams? Where do they actually come from? Are they only playing 20/20? Will anyone outside of India actually care?

Team's bidded for the superstars (under salary cap rules) and make up the remainder of their squad with local indian talent (grade cricketers)

david hussey (the other one) who was bought for 600k can't actually play either as he is in contract with an english county side

a lot of these players will end up not playing... apart from gilly, langer, warney etc...

fair enough about symonds, he got a lot because he is a gun player - he will be in breach of his contract he australia go and he doesnt.
i am wrong, and i stand corrected

but, warne also has a county cricket contract, so you are wrong about hussey not being able to play. as far as i understand it, the english players did not sign up for IPL out of respect for the county cricket, not because they couldnt.

the Pakistan tour has also been shortened, so the Australians will be over there for at least a couple of games.
