Reflections on 2009 and Poker Goals for 2010

Postby trishan » Mon Dec 21, 2009 3:59 pm

I thought with the new year fast approaching we should all take this opportunity to reflect on the year 2009 and make some realistic goals for 2010.

I started taking a lot more seriously this year than I have in the past. I played in my first big live torunament (Melb Champs Main Event) and while I just missed out on cashing, I had an invaluable experience that really just fuelled my interest in poker. Then there was the 888PL Season 1 where I logged heaps of games online, managed to finish in the top 10 on the DT LDB and made a few good friends along the way. This was topped off by a deep run in Adelaide, again missing out on the money by a whisker. Towards the later part of the year and currently I have been playing cash games and I am a long way from being a profitable player.

My goals (pokerwise) for 2010:
*Finish reading/Reread the following books
- Mathematics of Poker
- Harrington on Holdem 1 and 2
- Read em and Reap
- Sklansky's Theory of Poker
*Subscribe to a poker video training site
*Review my HHs from 2009, find common errors and consider possible solutions
*Finish the year in profit after practising good bankroll management

Please feel free to post your reflections and goals for 2010.

2009 was a strange year for me, my game had major up and downs. I've ended up about $10k in the black thanks to poker this year, and have absolutely nothing to show for it.

I've learnt so much about my own game from the hours I've logged in but as is the way with the poker, the more you know, the harder it is to win. Apart from a 6 hour period in Melbourne during a deepstack tournament I appear to have been cold decked for around 4 months. I've mantained a decent standard of play but my frustrations started showing through and started costing me more buy-ins than I'd like. Not getting it in bad, just behind on bad draws or when the numbers didn't add up.

So, my aims for 2010.
- Improve my game by taking the biggest step I've taken. Poker books. My next 2 weeks will be study non-stop.
- Adelaide Champs Feb '10. Next big target. See I can get a decent bankroll together in order to make a good run at a few events.
- Another 'big' trip tentatively pencilled for May/June. Waiting on a mate to come through, but a trip to Vegas might be feasible if everything comes together.
- Melbourne Champs/Vic Champs/Hachem Deep Stack - Whatever events/trips I can justify, I will be making the effort.

- My biggest aim for 2010.
ONLINE POKER
There is so much money on offer out in cyberspace 24 hours a day, I just need to come up with a gameplan so I can get my little share.

As I have previously stated I struggle massively on the internetz, my reading is the best part of my game live so my game suffers without that ability on my side, so I will be making a concerted effort to sort that out ASAP.

And if I can out-flop/out-turn/out-river/out-play/out-psyche Scott Murrin several times along the way, I'll be a happy little vegemite. :P

BRM
Books (PLO cash and NLHE MTT focus)
Playing more when I want to play, less when I'm just bored (even more prone to LLLLLLLLLAGy play)

With the number of hands I play, I should be a much better, or maybe even profitable some days!, player than I am, but I have no discipline and am prone to "soft" tilt, particularly online - calling 4 bets with QQ, relying too much on implied odds for a draw, ignoring paired boards etc. I want the patience (and courage?) to lay down hands when I know I'm behind and start building my stack again.

Oh, and some BRM :D

I'm getting HEM for xmas, and I want to show a profit over the next 12 months, even if its like $20, over a sustained period - this will come about from reading more books, actually thinking my way through every hand, not just some and playing with some BRM rules. Maybe not the classical ones, but I'm trying to come up with my own rules, at least until I get out of the micro/low stakes.

This will make me a happy boy in 2010

Tuff book to read IMO. I'm a big fan of maths and stats and have tried to read this book a dozen times in the past year. I can only get a few pages into a chapter before my head starts to hurt and the mathematical symbols turn into jibberish.

Seems like a sensible list of goals. Good luck with em buddy.

Because I do a lot of stats courses at Uni it isn't too bad so far but I think the authors don't explain things enough for people who have no stats background. This can get confusing when they skip explaining steps in their logic. I also find there are a few errors you need to be careful of.

- Actually read a poker strategy book or two.
- Have a serious go at playing poker online, with the goal being to use it as a second income on a regular basis, as compared to every few months.
- JHDS 2010. Don't you go backing out Scott ;)
