Like you said you rarely show when not required to, same here... Sometimes I never do, but when I do it would be 2 or 3 times at the most...

I guess Ben knew he was beat. And sounds like the other guy then had a decent chip lead, and didn't need the info.

I think everyone at the table was entitle to ask him to turn over his cards. I certainly wasn't happy that he mucked as I had just moved to the table and had no reads on him. The tournament director actually told off the dealer for not turning over the cards before resuming to deal 4th and 5th streets.
It was actually the biggest pot of the tournament at the time and Ben lost about 70% of his stack here. He just mucked and walked away which is another no no when the hand is still active.

You can never have enough information...
