I can attest to this :)

It is an incredibly harsh penalty. AGREED

The most that should happen is a warning issued, if this player is a repeat offender then possibly a three hand to one orbit penalty applied.

Also you do not get into the finer details of what occurred, he pushed all in and did you request a count or did you just see the chips and assumed a count?

He physically moved all his chips in, then I saw the previously unseen chips.

In the above case you have detailed I would actually issue a warning to the player and leave it at that. I do not kill the hand, it still goes to showdown, and you learn from your mistake as well.

Always be aware of your opponents chip count I try to as best I can
and always ask for a count when you are calling for your tournament life. I do if they don't declare it

I do keep track of opponents stacks, and always check out a new player at my table's stack, which is why I was so surprised by the amount he had when he pushed.
I would imagine he was a repeat offender to get more than a warning.
Basically, the TD just happened to be watching the hand, and when He pushed I remarked "Woah, were'd all that come from" and then another player also commented he thought the guy was hiding chips. He had about 4K in 100s and about 10 or so 1000s which were covered by a few 500s. This was just before a break/colour up, and I heard at the break he had so many 100s from a multiway allin on his previous table.
The TD didnt award the pot as if I had called, just what was in the pot before the guy shoved.
This was the first time I had seen this guy, and from talk at the breaks during games since then, and further play at the same table as him, he's got a bit of a rep for pissing off other players with bad etiquette, like repeatedly mucking or betting out of turn deliberately and mucking face up while still live play, and it seems maybe hiding his big chips.
Image ...11.59% of bad beat stories are just misplayed hands ...

That makes a lot more sense then.

Couldn't imagine such a harsh penalty actually being given even for repeated warnings in just that tournament. Actually, I CAN and often DO imagine it, it just never happens :)
Pardon me, but I think you'll find that's a shovel. See you next Tuesday!

I stick drawing pins on my desk (pins sticking up) and when I get tired or bored I close my eyes spin 8 times on my chair, I then slam my hand down on the table and HOPE not to hit any of the pins.........the anticipation gets the adrenalin going and wakes you up a bit. If you manage to hit a drawing pin or 2 that pretty much wakes you up too, so win/win really.
