The RAA has contracts with the motels, simple as that.
The Motel charged for something they shouldn't have.
The room was organise through payment you make to the RAA so I would put it back on the RAA to work out how to get you the money back.
In fairness to the Dog and others such as myself, Bacon didn't make that clear in his opening post.

Just wondering what you would do in this situation:
Your car breaks down in the middle of nowhere. As an RAA member, you get to stay in a motel for free. But the motel asks you for $50 per night upfront, and you pay it (cos hey, you need somewhere to stay).
Not a mention of an agreement between RAA and the Motel. But the information by most on here appear to agree with what should have happened which differs from what actually happened.
Again in hindsight, maybe Bacon should have re-phoned the RAA whilst he was still there in the reception area. That way he could have ask for an explaination or clarification of what the Motel person was doing before parting with his $50.
Good post tho Bacon and some sensible responses too.
