I've never had the need to use the stay over facility (very close last trip). In an ideal world had you rang the RAA, told them of your situation and asked for their advised as to where you can stay and what was the protocall re; payments etc.
Once at the motel I'm sure the motel operator would have asked for some sort of referal number to support them being payed by the RAA in full.
Having said that, I'm definately going to ask next time so I have the correct information. I usually upgrade to their very best cover before we go away on a road trip.
For some reason I forgot to upgrade last month and we were very lucky to get home from Paringa after hitting the roo after making a couple of modifications to the car to make it drivable.

FAIL
It is your responsibility to understand the terms and conditions of your RAA contract.
Unless you are fully aware those conditions and processess, the onus falls back on you. Its no use saying " oh I didnt know that" do it the right way and you have no reason to cry foul and then running of to the media or whoever because for your mistake.

Re: Am I crazy or what?
If the RAA contract that you have read backwards says "You don't have to pay anything for accommodation" and you pay it, does that make RAA in the wrong?
No. So why should you be ringing the RAA?????

Yes if you say thats was i says I beleive you.
Now look at it from the hoteliers position, you rock up and say i want a room and book it up to the RAA, their response is the RAA dont have an account with us so you will have to pay. why would you have recourse with the hotel its not their fault.
Question
Did the RAA send you to that hotel or was it your choice.
Did the RAA when you rang them give you reference number
Did you contact the RAA prior to booking the room.

Re: Am I crazy or what?
The RAA and the motel have a contract, and the motel contacted RAA (to find out what they will get) before the room was required.

Re: Am I crazy or what?
I don't think for a second Bacon just rocked up to a hotel and said "Car is screwed, gimme a room, bill the RAA"
The RAA has contracts with the motels, simple as that.
The Motel charged for something they shouldn't have.
The room was organise through payment you make to the RAA so I would put it back on the RAA to work out how to get you the money back.

Re: Am I crazy or what?
Nah, you need to talk to the RAA to let them know what you're going to be doing with their money I would have thought.
SGIC will give me a free loan bike if mine gets stolen under certain circumstances. This does not mean I can just go and hire whatever I want and bill SGIC for it later, I have to organise it thru SGIC. Simple really
