i never said that they dont have captains gundog, you aren't obviously from the comprehension planet
but in my opinion, the importance of captains in american sport is much less than others. when watching basketball they never mention the captain, and the captain doesn't really do much - because the coach can coach the players a bazillion times a game (due to timeouts, much the same as gridiron, baseball, ise hockey and others you mentioned), there is not a lot of need for leadership on the field. but in soccer/football, aussie rules, and definitely cricket, the captain is much more than a ceremonial position, because of the game time no timeouts.
this is why its not an american thing.
but all of that is beside the point, which is that 888pl is running with the sporting analogy for their competition structure.
who cares what they are called? do you care that a subway guy is now called a sandwich artist? i think not
so its a moot point anyway, who cares.

Hi ya benny the cunt...
I guess I care because I made the topic.
I don't know why it bothers me so much, it just does. It is just a really really bad title and for some reason I want to just yell Ahoy Captain every time assistance is needed.
But the term is here to stay, I just feel there is better titles that can be had.
Ohhh and sandwich artist... I don't even know how to say how terrible that title sucks!

Re: Oh Captain our Captain
I think the term 'Captain ' is quite appropriate for a poker facilitator..
for several reasons....
Poker for me has wild West[ of America .. beginnings' and the movie ' Maverick epitomises some of these basics.
Poker of Today still holds most of these core elements and Characteristics. Afterall the Paddleboats of the Missisippi where the romance of Poker began {illegal gambling on the Rivers where no State Troopers had any juridiction, they were self contained and constantly moving}. had Captains..
Todays 888pl venues could be consider ruderless vessels needing guidance and tutorail by a Captain.
If fact some venues contain 'pirates" robbing innocent patons blind a good Captain of a fine well run ship would prevent this.
The Skill and daring of some players[pirates] needs to be controlled and orderely on a ship/venue and a good capable Captain needs many skills to achieve a enjoyable and rewarding environment.
Sure a sporting association could be applied but I think this aquaditic ananolgy could be also applied.
after all the good ship 888PL is being run by a Five Star General ... a G[General ]. . Kay
and is fighting many wars on various Fronts.
even an Army anaolgy could be applied .....
off into another "battle" against villianous foes...

Re: Oh Captain our Captain
Marketing wanted a new title for our TD's to complement the sporting them and analogies we would be using.
They initially wanted tournament coach or referee/umpire.
I though coach was too misleading as our TD's are not trained to coach players in any form of the game, referee is too dictatorial and everyone loves to hate a referee.
In the end I decided on Captain, basically because in sporting terms it still means they are a part of the playing community and team, but they are the respected leaders of this team. They are not seperated from the community nor put above them, such as coaches and umps. They are apart of the community, equal as all other, but respected leaders of the team who others look to for support and guidance.
That's the story behind Tournament Captain, doesn't mean I like it. But it's something different.
