pub poker offers players a fun, free (or cheap) way to play and improve their skills. it sounds to me like the casino wants these players at the casino learning how to play but losing lots of money in the process.
in fact, pub poker leagues are increasing the numbers of players exposed to poker - surely an inceased player base is GOOD thing for sky city!

You should include the link to the story inside this thread.

I guess they haven't worked out that it's increased the number of players at the cas because there's a lot more people who suddenly think they can play.
Just doesn't make any sense to me.

It was also on the radio ( Mix 102.3??) , with some guy from the pubs and clubs association investigating the fact of if it is legal to endorse celebrity tournaments, TV shows and cash buy-ins.. as it promotes irresponsible gambling and is taking money away from sky city..

Official response:
We have been aware of this move from SkyCity for some time. I am not overly concerned about this direction, we have worked closely with the OLGC to ensure that we are not doing anything illegal or that may be in breach of legislation.
The enforcement arm of the OLGC asked us to remove the equipment hire fee from our buy in events. We did this immediately upon their request.
The event that police investigated was an A.P.L. event, they were charging an EHF and were subsequently asked not to charge this and A.P.L. decided to run a freeroll event that night.
In all things poker related we always deal closely with the governing bodies (VCGR and OLGC) and with us introducing cash buy in events in both states it has definitely soured some business relationships with casinos slightly.
The casinos tried to fight free roll poker been introduced to these states but as a result has seen their market grow as a result. With 888PL (formerly NPL in SA,VIC and TAS) now offering micro buy in games they should see their market grow once again, especially for buy in tournaments such as those offered at Melb Champs.
If we do lose the right to operate CBI events in SA, it defintiely hurts the $100K GTD final we have on offer and as a result we may need to change our competition structure at a minimum.

Re: Pub Poker Being Threatened By Skycity...
One would think that the marketing people at the casino have not done their homework very well, their potentional market would have increased because of Pub Poker wether it CBI or Freeroll, they also forget that the players from outside metro Adelaide are now learning Poker and may be tempted to play at the casino next time they visit town.
The response from the AHA is the most confusing, I would have thought that they would come out and defend pub poker as it benefits their members.
Whats the difference between CBI Poker and Bingo, from my position nothing as both require you to part with cash to play.
