Ok results time.
This is the odds calculator i used when investigating this little conundrum, and its from cardplayer.com so im assuming its accurate here
http://www.cardplayer.com/poker_odds/texas_holdemThe correct answer (according to this site) is that 56, 67 and 78 suited have an equal chance of cracking aces. Assuming that our suit is live against the aces, our suited connectors will win 22.87% of the time, AA will win 76.76% of the time and there is a 0.37% chance of a tie.
Obviously tha chances of these combinations of cards hitting starights, two pair or trips is equal, but there are some interesting thoughts too.
- what if the board runs 9 T J Q K, that surely makes 89's chances a little less, but perhaps that is made up for by the fact that 89 is less likely to be counterfeited by a higher board pair after we hit our bottom two.
Interesting. I wonder what other poker odds calculators suggest.
In short, the winner was 56, 67 and 78 suited equally.
