Salary cap in Football - good or bad?

I really don't like the "rewarding mediocrity" line..
There is some merit in it, but it's not as simple as that.


Also, with clubs having money - even though they can't use it to attract better players (unless the money is "freed up") but they can use it to develop the list, build/acquire better training facilities, investigate alternative methods etc.

the crows are a good example of a team that has done well within the current system without bottoming out and "rewarding mediocrity"

their facilities and coaching methods are the best in the league without a doubt.

but this raises another question. will the crows be destined to finishing in positions 4 thru 8 because they will not accept failure as other clubs readily seem to? maybe they need to tank a couple of seasons to get some gun draft picks?

But they are still limited to the talent they can draft, plus a couple of trades here and there - they can not use their excellent monetary/anything else you care to mention, position to attract quality players over and above those who have squandered opportunity after opportunity in managing their club. Sure, there is the odd Judd situation that pops up, but its not often enough to ensure all clubs are run as efficiently as possible. ie. those clubs which are not managed as best as can be, still manage to survive.

Further more, the whole system encourages tanking. Yucky.

True, but it doesn't hurt to go over just how a salary cap distorts the/a code, and keeps it from achieving its potential!

Besides, I know (relatively) nothing about that football, and as such wouldn't be able to contribute - and I know you'd all miss my contributions

We were indeed talking about a salary cap for Football, but that's rather quickly in the 'geez that's way too hard' basket (at least for now).

So I asked how the current salary cap is implemented in the AFL, mainly because I know nowt about it and partly because I suspect it's fataly flawed - mostly stemming from the 'artificial' even-ness of the comp.

From what you guys have mentioned so far, the best way to get a good player seems as though you should be completely crap and draft a young'un. That's not being very competetive now is it?

the only thing worse than not being able to get a player to your team is to be able to get ALL the good players to your team.

neither system is that great, but salary cap and draft rules are definitely better than open slather IMO.
