I'd just like to remind everyone that benny the cunt said Geelong would win by 80 points and then wouldn't take a bet for them to win by 40 or more :D

Off on a slight tangent.... one of my best mates is a mad Geelong supporter and he's also probably the loudest person on Earth so watching the match with him was pretty entertaining :) Needless to say, after the game he was absolutely devo.

To be perfectly honest, I really did feel for him. There is no doubt in my mind that over the course of the season Geelong were the best side. So rather than gloat more than what was necessary I offered him what little consolation I could and reminded him that his team won the league, Hawthorn really only won the finals.

This then begs the question... does the club who finish in 1st place at the end of the regular season get enough recognition for their achievements?

What exactly DO they get other than a double chance at what is essentially a separate cup competition ?
Pardon me, but I think you'll find that's a shovel. See you next Tuesday!

Pete, AFL minor premiers recieve the McClelland Trophy, which recognises achievement in the minor round. But you're right in that its not as publicised that much.

But, thats the great thing about AFL - premierships can be won or lost by one good performance. I see that as a positive thing, not a negative one.

AFL would have a quarter of the dead rubber games experienced by all top soccer leagues each season.

But remember, just because they are different, doesnt mean its better or worse - except for NFL, except for NFL.

hehe you're a silly man benny the cunt :)

Macca- wasn't trying to take anything away from the finals series (quite enjoy it) but rather focusing on the regular season itself.

I knew they got a trophy, can't remember the last time I ever saw it awarded to anyone.

It seems as though there's as much emphasis on finishing 4th as there is 1st with the entire season only taking place in order to qualify for the finals.

To me, that devalues the regular season by a lot.

I think the opposite Pete, i think it places extra value on the entire season, not just the first three quarters of it until the champion is known.

Think of all the mid range 8-15 EPL clubs that will know that they are going to finish in one of those pointless positions a month or two away from the end of the season.

Yes, getting first isnt as valuable, but it makes every minor round match more valuable.

Every spot those 8-15 teams finish higher is an extra half a million pounds (minimum)... I'd say there's some incentive :)

From a club owners point of view, yes.

But fans don't go, yay that draw moved us from 15th to 13th.

Thats my point.

not when the top 4 clubs make hundreds of millions in sponsorship deals

an extra half a million might mean something to them, but it doesn't mean they will do any better next year

Rubbish, a spot or two could very well mean the addition of another player that could be good for them for the next several years.

See the other thread for examples of why you're perhaps not as well informed as you could be.
