Do we expect too much from TD's?

JJ, do you think we TD's expect too much from our regular players & forum posters??

Good question Matt and my answer is personally NO.. I do not think that at all!
I personally believe we tend to become so familiar with TD's, rules and each other that we tend to become a little complacent.

However, this was a topic directed towards TD's and it isn't about bagging them, it was just I had a discussion with a TD who outlined some of the expectations placed on them by players and I had discussions with players when they have not agreed with a TD in regards to how they had handled a situation.

Personally, I think at times we forget that there has to be an element of human error in everything! Not every single ruling or the way a situation is handled is going to make everyone happy.

Having said that, I do love consistancy and I think at times there is not enough of that from TD's.

But I maintain it is interesting to hear other players view points.

(For the record, I was not looking for anyone to put in what the TD job description should be.)

Ok.. well if there is a TD that is not aware of his or her faculties as is being hinted at by that particular comment, then surely that should be brought to the attention of Annabelle or Garth?

I had to start my thread off neutral due to a comment that Garth made once about asking for opinions, now others have expressed theirs I can also.

I had a discussion with a TD one night and it came to light about expectations put on TD's, eg: that they are expected to be cuddly and friendly at all times, they are expected to be strict without scaring players away, that players often want to intrude on their lives away from poker, they are supposed to have answers in their head at all times, they have to have the skills to deal with players of so many types of personalities and walks of life and as a result walk a fine line all the time.... list goes on.

I honestly never thought of the fine line that TD's walk every night, so my eyes were opened up.

do you expect less than what you have described above from them?

dont forget it is their job - most of them are doing it for the money and would much rather be playing. all of the above just comes with the territory, and a lot of these skills are required in most jobs where you have to deal with the public (especially when they are pissed!)

having said this, i think the TDs do an excellent job

I expect the TD's to draw my name out at every 1st break. It just doesn't happen

I haven't yet played a game where I thought the TD was doing a BAD job. There have been some where I've thought they haven't done a great job, but each TD brings something different to the table.

Its like bartenders. The good ones are the ones that make you feel wanted and comfortable. And you keep drinking til the pub closes.

The bad ones are the ones that don't pay attention or just don't talk or even acknowledge you.

Now you also have to look at it from their side, The customers that you want to stick around are the ones that make your job easier. The ones that make your job difficult, or deliberately try and make things harder because they used to work in a bar and think they still know it all.

The thing is like any game or place, you have to respect the decisions that are made by the TD. A lot of TD's will rule differently on the same set of actions because of the perception that they have of the situation. There are no hard and fast rules regarding each and every situation because of the human element.

Hell, i have had incidents with my parents before, that was difficult. But it was handled badly by the players involved.

Which is why i added at the beginning of my speeches. If there are any rulings that need to be made, call me across and i will sort it out.

Nothing worse than having arguments between two table captains, all because they think they know the rules better. If your not the TD, you call him across to sort it out, if he is wrong, don't argue in front of him, because it is his Job, if you think you could do it better, then send of the resume.
