I also think $90 is not very exciting, I think Des's idea was a good one

Is $90 not appealing to the same kind of people who will play a 4 hour freeroll online in order to win $0.20??
For a competition that technically could be gotten for free, I think $90 is a decent payout, and about a day's pay for some. And remember, that's only for 26-50th place.... you go further, you win more.

26-50th out of how many tho mr bacon sir?
It's safe to assume that a lot of dollars have been spent even making it to the final, so to do what I would say is very well and make it that far through the final...$90 does seem a bit underwhelming.
I do think it's a decent enough idea to start with though.

Pardon me, but I think you'll find that's a shovel. See you next Tuesday!

I'd still rather see the top 10% (if 500 runners) get something, than only the top 5%.
Isn't this the same argument about only giving points to the top 15, whether there are 20 players or 120??
Irrespective of the number of runners, it's still money for jam.

so you've never played more than a couple of games a season and didn't get ur stamp cards filled ?
**edit**
Actually I'll make this clearer...
Let's assume a player has done the minimum required to make the state final ie played just one venue every week and made the top 5 there (I'm not going to entertain the thought that they've done it without filling their cards), that makes it approx $20 to fill their cards (yes I know it depends where you play but that's a reasonable average) x 10 weeks per season = approx $200 as a MINIMUM.
Now don't get me wrong here, I don't have a problem with $200 over 10 weeks. I love the NPL and that's that.
So they've spent the minimum and managed to make it to the final (nice work!). They then manage to plough through the field and end up with...90 bucks!?!?!
It's better than a kick in the goulies but it's still a bit rough I think.
Going on the prize payouts for pretty much any tournament I've played online, the lowest pay bracket at least gets their money back or close to it. So if we changed $90 to at least $200 that would make more sense to me.
It's only money for jam on the actual day mr bacon, not the 10 (or more) weeks spent getting there.

Pete,
Just to throw a spanner in the works you have not included any venue vouchers or prize money that may have been picked up aswell

i think 90 bucks is better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick.

Yep that's true, partly because they could actually have still made it without finishing higher than 4th and/or because they could have been bumped up due to others above them finishing higher elsewhere or making the 'top 50'.
I'd be very surprised if there's more than a handful of players at the state final that haven't spent at least $200 getting themselves qualified.
In the suggestion Garth posted he mentioned a prize pool of $20,000. I'm not privy to the details but I'd be surprised if that wasn't mostly taken up by what's on offer just for 1st place currently.
Note that I've deliberately not said how many places I think should be paid or how I think the % should be spread out, but rather what I think a fair and reasonable minimum would be.
It's a state final after all, it's hard(ish) to get there and there's a big field to get through.

I think the "we have spent $200 and therefore we should get more than this" is a bit of a misnomer.
we havent paid that 200 bucks to get a return on our money, we have paid it because we all love poker.
surely the fun of playing in the local pub and meeting new people is also worth something. and to do all that while also getting a chance at some cash is also pretty good.
having said that, prize packs might also be a good idea. i suppose thats up to guru garth to decide

I think all the prizes and cash are excellent! Ive been playing NPL poker for 2 seasons and always filled out both my cards, spending money in order to play poker and have never won any money for finishing 1st in the YP region for both seasons. It hasn't bothered me before so why would winning a minimum of $90 upset me now?! Its a big incentive for more people to play more tournys, which to me means more points for place getters at all venues. Think about that???
