It's one pair! Regardless of face value.

Unless you manage to hit a set - or four cards to the flush/straight - you're always going to risk losing.

It's not even about hitting or not hitting in these instances - it's about playing the hand as a whole. The fact anyone even HAS a "nemesis" hand shows that they are too hole card-centric.
