Yes there are very many similarities, but that is the same for all field invasion sports, including football, rugby and soccer and even some court invasion games like basketball, netball and handball.
There are certain priciples of attack and defence that apply to all invasion games - no matter which one we are talking about.
So yeah, although i have banged on in recent posts about all the differences between rugby and Australian rules, all invasion games have a set of basic tactical principles that ensure success.
Perhaps this is why some athletes are proficient at many sports, not because they possess the specific techniques required for success in each sport, but because they are expert in many 'game sense' aspects of sport that are easily transferable across different codes.
As for those who are good at both cricket and footy, well they can just go and get knotted (glad i said that, was sounding way too much like a uni essay)
"Some athletes are proficient at many sports." You wouldn't fit into this catergory. Maybe "Some athltetes aren't proficient at any sport" is more to your suiting Matt.
