Here is the table I was referring to with regards to our medal tally not being as crash hot as it is on first blush. Granted, it is commonwealth games, and it doesn't actually prove anything, but it does make interesting reading in the context of this thread.

6. Putting the Aussie medal whitewash in context
Crikey reporter Michael Newhouse writes
With all the communal back-slapping that's been going on across the country since the Commonwealth Games began, you'd think Australia had achieved something truly memorable over the past eight days.
So, following a tip-off from a subscriber, Crikey thought we'd calculate how Australia compares to the other top 13 Commonwealth Games medal winners (as of 8.30am this morning) in relation to GDP and population. If it makes just one Aussie punter a little more humble over then next week then we've done our job.

the yanks beat the previous record (which was set in the heats) by 4 seconds!!!!
the top 5 teams were all under the previous mark, which i think is pretty crazy.
australia bronze, we have had a good start to the games, with most medal chances actually medalling
Eamon Sullivan broke the 100m world record in the lead-off leg too, looking good for the individual 100m

doesnt this prove the exact opposite of what you set out to prove?
it proves that except for the small nations such as NZ or Jamaica, that we are the best on pretty much every metric you choose?
and with the smaller countries, because they won 10 or less medals, all you need is a single gun athlete to skew these results a hell of a lot.
i think you have just proved the opposite bacon!!!

I actually started my last post incorrectly - It wasn't the table I was looking for, as it doesn't actually touch upon what my original point was - which was regards to how much we spend per medal.bennymacca wrote:doesnt this prove the exact opposite of what you set out to prove?

This has only to do with GDP:medals, and we drop from 1st to 4th. Just thought it made interesting reading. I'm still looking for the other table

yeah but if you look at who is first to third, they have won less than 10 medals.
if you were kenya for example, all you need is a couple of their long distance runners to finish 4th instead of medal, and these results would change a lot. if u are australia who won 153 medals, then this is a lot different
