From the Herald Sun this morning, and featured on SEN talkback:
PORT Adelaide AFL star Chad Cornes could take the extraordinary step of chopping off a finger to help Power make the finals this season.
The Port Adelaide vice-captain said if he re-injured the ring finger on his right hand - damaged against St Kilda six weeks ago - he would consider having it amputated rather than spending a long stint on the sidelines.
"If I shatter the finger again it is not good news," Cornes said.
This has been done before, but what do others think? He's been playing again for a couple of weeks, but according to reports is finding the bandaging and wearing of a protective glove restrictive to his play and is reported to be considering this action.

And please, no replies along the lines of "Who cares, he's a wanker anyway."

Re: Amputation?
i think its a crazy idea, i know chad is a good player for the power but its not him that is the factor in if they win or lose. Maybe it would be a good idea if the power made the finals but that is a long way off at the moment

It's a joke, he made an off-the-cuff comment that if his finger got smashed again then he might have to. This doesnt mean he will.

Re: Amputation?
No-one said he "will".
Sure, it started out in jest when he first sustained the injury, but it is an option he's since said he'd consider if he were to re-injure the broken finger. Everyone's aware it would be a "worst case scenario".

Re: Amputation?
Didn't Jacob Oram get his finger cut off to play for NZ in the Cricket World Cup? I know he considered the idea.

He didn't in the end, but would have if it was his only means of playing in the World Cup;
New Zealand all-rounder Jacob Oram said he will do anything to ensure he plays in the Cricket World Cup, including cutting off his injured ring finger.
Oram suffered a break during the first Chappell-Hadlee Trophy match against Australia a fortnight ago.
"We've got taping techniques and guards that fit into a batting glove, and I'm confident I'll be fine," said Oram.
"If it means cutting the finger off, if that's the last resort, I'll do that, there's no way I'm missing this."

Re: Amputation?
daniel chick did as well
if it came to a decision where he had to miss 8 weeks, or cut his finger off (which would be the decision he needs to make if he broke it again), then i bet you he would get it chopped off

Re: Amputation?
As did Brett Backwell, who plays for Glenelg
In 2005 Backwell enjoyed a brief period of international celebrity status when he announced that he was to have part of his left ring finger amputated. He was flown to the United States to appear on the September 22 episode of The Late Show with David Letterman.
The finger had caused him constant pain and restricted movement since injuring it in 2002. Surgeons offered him the option of fusing the bones in his finger, but he declined this as it would not have allowed him to continue playing.
