Re: bad beat

Whilst we're speaking of bad beats (this story isn't a bad beat tho) and Nevah play JJ and sizing raises...

Got JJ twice tonight, now I like JJ, 1st time I lost some chips, but the raise and 2 bets i threw in (got called obviously) told me I was behind and it was time to let them go.

2nd time, utg limps, I raise to 3xBB 600 from mid pos (I have 2k back).
Button (Russ) calls
SB, BB and limper all fold
flop comes down 9TQ, I bet 600, long pause, call

I'm putting him on A9, A10, 89 - not 2 pair or the Q tho, I'm thinking he would have raised as I'm sure he puts my on JJ/KK - he as already called my earlier JJ correctly - and he doesn't want the board pairing (we play together a lot). I'm thinking he is drawing to something - either his A, or something to fill the straight

Turn comes 7, I don't think this improves his hand

I push all-in with my up and down + mid pair (what happened to all my wonderful patience????)
anyway, he calls, shows KJ. Whoops. HORRIBLE read by me.
I guess he wasn't drawing to the straight, but rather had it.

Putting aside my horrible play - stupid, stupid rush of blood -
was 3x the BB enough in that position, or should it have been 4x???

I didn't think your play was that bad. Honestly, the odds of flopping a straight are so low.

3xBB is a big raise (1800) and if he's the type of player to call 1800 on KJ, he's going to call 2400. Personally, I would've folded KJ to an 1800 bet, but that's just me.

Perhaps all in pre-flop would've sufficed - but you were screwed from the start.

I would've played it the same way (minimum 3xBB with JJ), although possibly would've pushed all in on the flop, being scared of the Q and straight draw. And he would've called me, anyway.

3x is considered a standard raise I'm led to believe.

You can be happy with saying at least you raised preflop and it wasn't lame. You can also be happy that it was picture cards that called you (although russ maybe likes KJ a bit too much :P ). You had a draw and had already hit the board. Mostly unlucky I'd say. If your read was just incorrect then just go ahead and pay the man.
Pardon me, but I think you'll find that's a shovel. See you next Tuesday!

Thanks for the thoughts guys - I'm always interested to hear other peoples opinions on how hands play out.

ALK - BB was 200, for 600 total. Doesn't change that much, but.....

Russ and JK? Nah, I can't possibly imagine what you're talking about???

Ohhhhh. Well.

If BB was 200, and I had JJ, I would've raised to 600 too, I think. Now the KJ call ain't so bad :P

You're right though, another 200 doesn't really change much. If he called 600 on KJ he would've called 800 :)

I think Russ's saving grace was that he was on the button.

KJ is really average tho.

lol.

I'm curios to know where your hate of JJ originated from, Caroline. They're not my favourite pockets either, but I'll always play them in favour or 67 suited or 99.

That is the bit I'm trying to work out - I wanted him out of the hand, but I also didn't want to push all in preflop (cake and eat it too?)

Any takers for believing 800 or 1k would have got him out? I'll ask him next time I see him, but I'll never believe it

JJ, how can you not love JJ? They are still high enough you see complete boards under then, and low enough you aren't in too much danger of falling in love with them - I find it much easier to fold JJ than QQ, and yet you'll see almost as many boards under JJ :D :D :D

Not sure either to be honest, all I know is every single time I play them they have been beaten.

So now if I do get them I am either really really agressive or I fold.. LOL

Depends on how grumpy I am at the time.

But see... LOVE suited connectors... especially 45 hearts...
