Would anyone have a problem with that?

Let it begin!

If you do this you're basically taking out the legwork that most NPL punters work for. Now, instead of Steve (as an example) having to play at a regular venue every week, he can play once every 3, or 4 weeks. Hell he doesn't even have to play one game of NPL this season. He can go off and play elsewhere if he likes and try to qualify for their state/regional finals.

Just seems a bit unfair to the other players committing to a venue week in, week out, when theoretically, Steve doesn't have to play one game of NPL this season and he's automatically qualified. Then again he did win state final.

You don't see the winner of the World Cup automatically qualifying for the next one.

Edit by Pete - we have those words in the swear filter for a reason.

My topic (like the link above) happens to be a question to NPL management but also doubles as "General NPL Chat", especially since there's 3 pages of "chat" now.

The first words of your post were 'Quick question for NPL Ops'.

You were clearly asking them a question, there is clearly a place to do this already set aside for you. It's not difficult mate :)
Pardon me, but I think you'll find that's a shovel. See you next Tuesday!

Steve wrote:It is my humble opinion that in a situation where the 2 venues being compared did not have equal number of tournaments then the players highest average score should decide which venue they qualify from.

I can see merits for both ways, average is probably a better indication of how good someone is (or has gone) compared to total score, however an average over 2 weeks isn't really an indicative result compared to an average over a longer period of time (say 8 weeks). So the question would be if average was used in this case does the average count if you have only played 1 game, 2 games, 3, 4...where do you draw the line? And in the end which way you go doesn't really effect that person but the people below them that either miss out or make it, and either way someone won't be happy with just missing out.

Steve wrote:Now having said all that let me make it clear that my opinion is in no way compromised by the fact that this tiny little point is the difference between me making the states and missing out, that has absolutely nothing to do with it

Looking at the leaderboards if the average score was used as opposed to total then you may still miss out anyway as Lee's Mon night position would count (and not his Thurs in equal position) and that would leave me as the 5th qualifier still (I think).

Let's hope you can qualify from Payneham, or be given entry as a result of being the reigning champ, would hate to not see you there to try and defend your title :)

Really, tt isn't how you compare with yourself at another venue/time, it's how you compare with the people in the list you're in.

Having a "short" venue season is not overly common (compared to how many leaderboards there are)

I think it was mentioned before but keeping it simple is surely mandatory.

If I pretend the top 50 means just that for a moment, then how everyone qualifies now is actually pretty good.

If you can't qualify over 10 weeks then it's too bad, so sad.

No, I'm not sure if I made it myself yet.

Yes, I'm aware people sometimes work different hours (I'm about to do this myself).

Steve (Crotty), this is your payback for calling my allin with Q9 :D

Pot odds Pete!!!

So I gather from your comments that you thought it was an outrage when Liverpool were granted entry into the 2006 European Champions League based on their victory in 2005, even though they didn't qualify through the normal avenues?

Hang on, you're a liverpool fan too!

sneaky bugger! :)

That was a tough call as to if they should have been let in. I still can't decide if it was fair or not to be honest.

For the sake of comparison, it's not like they could sit out the season and just show up once when it's important :) With respect to the NPL's situation.. part of me thinks 'well surely winning the thing qualifies you for the next one' but another part of me thinks 'surely they'd not want to give them the opportunity to just not play for the entire season and show up only for the final'. I'm not saying that's what I think you'd do Steve cos I know you're an addict :D but it's too open to being 'abused' IMO.

**edit** It only got them entry to the qualification rounds, they still had to win their way through those to reach the CL proper. Exact same as if they finished 3rd or 4th domestically. If they were auto to the group stages, it would definitely have been rude.

Yea I see the point about sitting out the season having already qualified but in reality I don't really think it would happen. Anybody who qualifies and wins a state final obviously plays NPL regularly and I don't think anybodys primary objective in playing is to make the states. Perhaps in week 9 and 10 but certainly not before that. People play because they love the social aspect of a card game and a few drinks at the pub with good people. And even if someone did all but give up for a season because they were already qualified, they're only 1 person I don't think it would be that big a deal. They still have to go back to qualify the next season, unless they go back to back!

That's fair enough.

So what are you going to do for this seasons finals? :P

I might have made it but it depends how sundays results go for me also. It's entirely possible 2 of my friends have unknowingly/unintentionally completely screwed me over

I think I need one of them to finish in a higher position at sundays venue (doesn't matter which one) which will bump me up enough to sneak in.
