My only initial concern was Garths slightly incorrect use of the word discount (regarding $145 rooms).
Once I found out the venue themselves were putting in 5 grand and they had cheaper rooms for $70 I sucked it up and got over it.
I see absolutely nothing wrong with wanting to have the venue itself booked out first ( 5 grand ffs!) and I don't think anyone has done anything even slightly sneaky.
WELL DONE AND THANK YOU to the venue and to Garth.

agreed. pretty big risk for the berri to make, and it seems to be paying off with the number of ppl registered.

If you have any hot single sisters aged from 18-35 i have a spare bed
she doesnt even have to play NPL
in all seriousness guys...
i was hugely suprised with the numbers already registered... and I think it will be awesome!
you arent paying for an entry into a tournament with a $ 5000 prize pool, a $ 1000 repecharge event, and the chance to give crap to me face to face... what more do you want for the cost of a few nights accomodation in a 4 1/2 star hotel?

Re: BERRI- CYNIC WITH THE EMPHASIS ON SIN
How many times to you see an international rock act come to Adelaide, and the tickets sell out, then lo and behold, about 3 weeks before they announce a limited amount of tickets will go on sale??
The event is built up, and people get excited about what I believe will be an excellent weekend... but not everyone jumps on straight away. They need to have some leverage for later on.
I was gonna stay at my son's house up there, but I might think about splitting the room with Des (or anyone else), if it means I'm getting a seat (can't see what my football team will think of me missing a game
).
Remembering it is a freeroll, then whether you have 400 starters or 600 starters (or 1500), I really don't mind. It's the whole experience of the weekend that will be worth it.
rcon (and anyone), can you honestly tell me that you wouldn't have booked if there were gonna be 600 players from the start?? I don't think the number of players would have an effect on whether I played or not.
I think we all agree that NPL/Berri Resort are putting on a great event and that we should be patronising the Resort as much as we can.
Garth, we seem to live in a pessimistic society, where we always focus on the negatives.... but you know, the week following the event, everyone will be talking about how great it was (except the bad beat that knocked them out) and wanting to know when the next one is. I, for one, thoroughly thank you for coming up with the idea, putting in the time to work through the logistics, and putting up with all the comments on here (and probably in real life too).

Re: BERRI- CYNIC WITH THE EMPHASIS ON SIN
After bandying it around head office and due to the fact that a few people seem to think I am been sneaky and using scare tactics we have now stopped taking entrants until Berri gets back to me with a definitive numbers staying at the resort.
I find it very disappointing that I now have to turn players away from this event.
I was really not expecting this sort of response, my first initial thought was we would be lucky to get 300 runners with the time, travel and costs involved.
I actually only have 100 people that have notified me personally of their intent to play but if we say the Berri Resort has 72 rooms at an average of 2.35 per room, that equals almost 170 runners. I have almost 40 people from the riverland who have notified me so we will say right now we have almost 220 confirmed runners.
I also have another fifty who have notified me that they will be staying with family in the region so that equals 270 runners.
Until I have definitive data that are the numbers I have.

Re: BERRI- CYNIC WITH THE EMPHASIS ON SIN
One last thing.
The teams event I capped at 300 as well but I never wanted to turn players away from that so we increased the field size.
As stated I did not expect the deepstack event to have the same pull as to the travelling and cost involved compared to the teams event.

Number of players doesn't have anything to do with it for me. It was the starting stack size I'm after. I need that to compensate for my poor play! Nah, halving the stack size does take something away from the event in my mind. More people tho? I've nothing against that.
At 10k, it becomes more marginal for me. But that is completely NPL's prerogative if they wish to change it, as it is mine to feel that way.

No issue with that

Yup - massive thanks for Garth, team and venue for coming up with the concept and then making it happen.
edit: And as Garth said, they might not even change the stacks, in which case, feel completely free to ignore that part of my post

Re: BERRI- CYNIC WITH THE EMPHASIS ON SIN
Thanks Garth
Professionally answered and managed.
I think you have now identified a lot of the issues and sorted out some of the confusion for the punters that neither they, nor NPL, or Berri Resort were fully aware of.
It was very much a black hole as to guess as to how many people would pay to play at this type of event. Past experience says this type of event tends to be either a famine or a feast.
Much was said initially about the affordability of rooms and preference given to those that stay and play at The Resort. As The Resort is almost fully booked (13 hotel rooms only at 9.00am today) The Resort has made arrangements with other accoms to help out thus increasing the potential for more players.
Other logistical issues have been brought to light incl.
What is the max number of players the venue can support?
If 500, then 400 from town and 100 locals
If 400, then 300 from town and 100 locals
If 300, then 225 from town and 75 locals
Can NPL supply enough chips?
Who will sleep in Des' room?
This event is still a LONG WAY OFF and so many people that have spoken to me won't know what work, study, family committments they have until much closer to the date and these people really do want to go, but to book and pay so far in advance is a genuine concern. What is the cancellation/ refund policy in the event of a worse case situation popping up?
How's this.
Find out the absolute maximum number of seats the venue can support.
Players can now book and stay anywhere as the Resort has made their money.
Rustle up sponsorships in the town to hold a golf tourney, fishing comp, local tours for non poker playing partners.
Run a series of mini- turbo satellites for players knocked out early with prizes like food & drink vouchers and the winners get a two day accom prize for later in the year. Support the venue that supports us by going back and spending later- sustainabilty.
