I was on Atkins and very strict about it, for about 3 months in late '06 and lost 30kg.

My weight then stabilised for 9 month as I started to eat normally again, but I did lots of running and cycling to keep the weight stable.

I then counted calories and stuck to a approx 1500-1600 calories a day for 5 weeks do drop from 100kg to 87.

But the diet I used thru both those periods was as follows.

Breakfast (whilst on Atkins)
2xBacon, 2xEgg (NO TOAST)

Breakfast (whilst counting calories)
2x weet-bix

lunch on both
tuna tin + salad if hungry

tea
steak with salad
chicken with salad.

Not really hard, just boring!

You stop being hungry after a while

I found it very daunting to start with, but it got easier as I started to see results. My cousin is following this plan and has dropped form 165 - 145 in the last 3.5 weeks too. So it does work.

Anyway, just thought I'd share that 'cause I have been in this situation and have succeeded.

Well done Rcon. Did you take any suppliments to help or was it just the above food intake??

I'm gonna Google Atkins and see what it's about but please reply via post or PM, well done again M8. My son Joel has just returned from weigh in and has dropped 9 kilos now.

Very helpful post Nathan. :D

What about drink's for meal replacements???? I have been having one most mornings for brekky as I tend not to eat brekky anyway & it stops me from picking on crap food around 10am.

I have a cross trainer, ab swing & leg machine (the new thingy seen on tv) at home, any suggestions for their best use???? Times to use, how often & does it matter what order I do them in??? In the process of trying to set up a mini gym!!! Shane also has a weight set but its sooo covered in spider webs dont know if I wanna risk it!!!!!

I should also mention I have a Zest membership, but just cant find the motivation to get there with kids hanging off my arm all day long!!!!

I am also taking chromium tablets once a day with food, I am told they help your liver to work more efficiently hence speeding up your metobolism, is this correct????

I also try to use my kids as weights!!!!! I give the 2 1/2 yr old aeroplanes with my feet & do them in sets of 10!!! I give the 10 month old aeroplanes with my arms & again - sets of 10

Hey Luke

From previous experience in the health and fitness industry i would highly recommend avoiding such programs like the Atkins diet.

ANY DIET THAT SAYS IT'S EASY SHOULD DEFIANTLY BE AVOIDED!

A very informative post Nathan. I guess I should spin my seat around and get on the tread mill instead of sitting here. Well I'm off and running, well not really running but waliking.

My forst task will be 20 minutes walking with variable sppeds and inclines, cardiac arrest, water, some tuna an salad and back on the computer. :?

Wish me luck

Hey Torch

Starting with the supplements; There is no true replacement for the real deal. The only supplement i would ever really recommend is Omega 3 only because it is limited to very select foods yet still essential in our diets.

Meal replacement shakes; If there was no way in hell i could convince you to eat breakfast then maybe they would be the way to go. But shakes lack the necessary carbs to kick start your proactive day. Shakes, if you make them with milk rather than water include lactose (a form of fat much harder to break down than regular glucose) meaning your starting the day on the back foot. So in general no....

Exercise; considering you have a few different pieces of exercise equipment i would recommend using one each day for 15 minutes. Mix it up. rather then exercise repetitively for 30 minutes a day, just crunch one machine for 15. Your exercise plan will have variety and you hopefully won't get board and you can focus one particular muscle group each day.

There is a saying in the fitness industry called "the valley of fatigue" which identifies what can happen when you over work a muscle group. If you over work a muscle group you can actually negate all the hard work you have put in to developing that particular region. That is why most good PT's recommend training at a gym over three days with each day dedicated to certain sections (chest and arms day, back and abs day, legs and glutes day).

Keeping variety in your program not only helps you stay focused but is better for your body as you never risk over doing it and never work your self into disproportion (the weird guy at the gym with massive biceps and chicken legs).

All in all, I recommend cardio in the morning and machine work at night. Cardio leaves you revitalized and gives you the bonus metabolism kicker. Machine work you generally leaves you knackered in need of rest, after a good machine work out have rest then go to bed for the perfect for recovery.

Happy to answer any more questions on this topic!

Regards

As I said, not so much an issue with the food now, am gradually traning my body not to snack on shit - its just the vodka & red bulls that r killing all my work ive done during the week!!!

If you ignore the levels of sugar in Red Bull, drinking them will increase your metabolism.

It has a fair amount of caffeine and also a huge amount of Taurine (a whole gram!).

Taurine is used as a supplement when weight training/body building.

If you must drink them (and I knoowww you love them) then maybe try the 'low sugar' Red Bulls.
Pardon me, but I think you'll find that's a shovel. See you next Tuesday!

Or you can be like me.

Travel to the middle of nowhere for work, with two fast food joints, that take 15 minutes to get a burger.

Drink a shiteload of water.
And walk, or bike to work.

But hey am feeling better for it. :-)

Still too scared to jump onto a scale at the moment.

Guys the reasons why 'quick' weight loss diets such as the ATKINS diet are so popular is that people lose a great deal of weight in a short peirod of time.

However, this weight loss is due to fluid loss, not because fluid intake changes, but because when carbohydrates are stored in the body water is stored as a part of the process. So less carbs (such as ATKINS) = less water storage and therefore less weight being stored.

This gives people a false sense of weight loss because although people are losing weight, people are not actually losing any body fat. So all of the associated problems that can be caused by excess body fat still remain, even though the person has lost weight.

As was mentioned above, the CSIRO diet is a really good one, when combined with regular exercise. Good luck all (wouldn't mind losing 5-8 kilos myself, im a little above my ideal playing weight, injuries and uni food certainly weren't a good combination lol. A PE teacher who is slighlty overweight, who ever heard of that :) )

I hear a lot of good things about the CSIRO diet. I'm also fairly sure it's geared towards females.

Last I heard they were working on a version geared towards fellas. Any news on this?
