Designated driver program?

Postby rcon » Thu Apr 24, 2008 1:07 pm

This something that I've wanted to see for a while, but haven't taken the time to write it up until now (see David's Challenge for motivation ;-)). But I'd really like to see some venues work out a system where players can get stamped up without, or at least minimum, buying of alcohol. Now it isn't too difficult if you're playing a 6:30 for 7:30 start game AND you've got time for a meal (rushed meals never thrill me), but it can be rather difficult for late games or for those times you can't get to the pub before 7.

And buying 8 soft drinks really is a rather pointless exercise, but what if you could register, thru the npl.com.au site that you're going to be a DD for X tourney on Y date and when you get you're cards, you get given "DD" cards which entitle you to just paid $$ over the bar in exchange for stamps. I'm thinking that the pre-registration would be needed, as you'd find some people would just abuse the system so they never have to purchase product over the bar. I'm also assuming that the TD's laptops are hooked up to the central db at some stage here?

The number of times I've wanted to play a late game, but not really been enthused at the though of driving for half hour in each direction to only be able to stamp up 1 card only. Or even the Palais on a Tuesday. I just don't have time to get home from work and make it down there in time for a meal and I'm not interested in going all that way for only 1 card.

I'm also aware that most venues where you are a regular, you can probably would something out with the management, but this would be far easier for most people, and it would also allow NPL and the pubs to point to a real "responsible service of alcohol" initiative and could garner some really good brownie points in places.

Can I get 2 posts counted for this one David?

That’s why I like the idea of registration. *Might* help weed out the opportunistic types. Then again, might not. But you'd think that the benefits its promotion might entail might make it worthwhile for the NPL operations type peoples to at least have a go at coming up with a workable model.

Maybe you can only register for 2 a week, or half a dozen a season - but I'm sure something could be worked out.

Hmmm. Just had to post this twice - does something strange happen to anyone else, if someone posts after you've hit reply, but before you hit submit?

If someone replies to the thread while you are typing your reply, it allows you to see what they have said before you actually submit it.

Gives you a chance to change your post.

Well its easy for you xtal, you never have to drive do you? Just think how many more games you could get to if Russ was able to stamp up and still be able to drive!

note: Yep - I get that sometimes Des, but a couple its just disapeared.

the problem is, that you are rewarding people for not spending over the bar - not really what the pubs and NPL want.

i would just become a designated driver (of myself) every week.

maybe encourage the pubs to give the same amount of stamps for a softie as a beer - even if it means they put the prices up on coke a bit.

thats a hard one rcon

Maybe you have to register to come along with someone else, and once both of you have registered, then you get your DD card. From a players point of view, it would be a really valuable service, but I can see how it might be rather difficult to design, and maybe even more so to implement. But it could also be a real driver of business if structured correctly

yup. I'm also known as Mathew. Play with Xtal and Russ a fair bit. Play(ed) with you at Crows Tav, Grand Junction and various other places.
