Made that mistake once when i asked a taxi driver what he thought about the upcoming (then) Australia v India test series. Got my ear chewed off for 20 minutes about how not to make assumptions :D Fair enough i guess, but i have asked similar questions of like 10 other taxi drivers and had great conversations.
