AFL 2011
I personally love this idea. John Elliot raised this idea about ten years ago now i think. He got shot down because he wanted every Victorian club (minus two) to form their own conference. The trouble with this idea though is that clubs may only ever get to play collingwood and essendon once in the regular season. I don't think this is a problem, but some of the poorer clubs finance people will complain.

Yeah but really the only point of this is to make the draw fairer, no other reason
Instead of that, I can end up seeing a 20 week season where you play everyone once, have some byes during the season, and then a longer finals series to make up for the dropping of the games. The problem with this model is that they lose out in having two blockbuster games a season like Coll ess or whatever

Re: AFL 2011
The nice about it, the more i like the divisional system.
The season stays the same length, the draw is a completely fair one, few/no dud games, and for those clubs always complaining about the lack of 'blockbuster matches' the response can be 'well, if you wanna play against the bigger clubs, then EARN the right to'.
The lack of finals games in the top division could even be outweighed by having the 'promotion' finals in the second division.
Im liking this idea a lot. The benefits of it (integrity of the competition), outweigh the negatives of it (less blockbuster games - potentially only one showdown, coll/ess etc), but that is from a sport purists point of view.
Whether the average football mum and dad fan cares all that much (i.e. would rather watch two coll/ess matches a year) is a debatable point, and the AFL have a track record of going with whatever will make them the most cash (in terms of scheduling), so im not sure.
A sticking point i believe might be how the divisions are decided upon. Would it be just one one years results? Cumulative results on the past five years?

Re: AFL 2011
that is very interesting, but im sure channel 7 would have factored this in at some point, and having games on 7mate would be ok.

dont you mean get a new television brodcaster? nothing wrong with my tv, just the location of my house (Riverland, SA) which means i dont get all the channels.

Yes i have fox, but that doesnt mean ill get all games live. What if the crows are playing a saturday night game versus carlton on 7mate? ill have to wait untill the next morning to get it.
Having said that, i think WinTV are getting us 7mate and Go! etc by the end of the year anyway.
