Re: AFL 2011
1 problem with that is all of the Vic teams are affiliated with V.F.L clubs. So how could you promote 1 of these clubs. It just would not work.

Not sure how it makes much of a difference with the VFL affiliate.

Re: AFL 2011
wow , dint this arouse discussions ...
Canberra Kangaroos , Hobart Hawks , Darwin Demons .....
i like Bacons thoughts re GF wins , 1 VFL 2 AFL etc etc
I think the interstate/non Victorian teams should have reserve teams , playing the other reserve teams in an AFL Reserves League ! !

Re: AFL 2011
Without looking it up, I'm pretty sure they tried it in Perth, and it failed. Sydney has a reserves team, as do Brisbane, Gold Coast and GSW.
They won't have (and nor do I want) a reserves side in the SANFL for any club (which is more likely than a national reserves competition)

aren't they considering dedicated reserves teams in WA again? (i think that is what has driven discussion in SA recently)
in terms of having a dedicated reserves comp for the AFL, i have been thinking about this lately and i think it is probably the best idea. this year they created the NEAFL which includes the reserves teams from brisbane, gold coast, and sydney. as well as other bigger clubs from each state, and NT etc, but i think its a logical extension to include teams from every state, as a separate league. as rcon said, flights are cheap these days. i can see a time where there is a dedicated reserves comp, where they follow the main afl fixture exactly, and either play as curtain raisers, or as the alternate fixture. i.e play home when the main team plays away etc, though i think the curtain raiser is more likely.
in terms of relegation and promotion to the AFL, it just wont happen. the scale of operations between a club like centrals compared to a club like the crows or the power is just too massive to overcome. it would be at least an of magnitude smaller. wiki says that a salary cap for SANFL in 2008 was 400k compared to what, 8 milly or something for the AFL sides, and the difference in spending on facilities and football department spending would be much greater than the player payments difference. it just wont' happen.
at the lower levels however, there seems to be the genesis of a national competition with the foxtel cup. i think its a great idea, and i can see it gaining notoriety and popularity in the future. this is in effect a relegation and promotion style competition (if conducted properly), and as it gets bigger, you will see the best clubs like centrals participating. with good ratings, the prize money will increase and then clubs will have no option but to participate.

Re: AFL 2011
1 problem the MCG & Etihad stadiums could not & would not have 4 games a weekend It would take the ovals back to the 70's mudpits that they were. Curtain raisers are a thing of the past.
How does it work out for S,A teams with their players returning or being dropped as to what side they can/are allowed to play for?

WA have just (like last week) rejected the reserves teams.
Harps, each Crows/Power listed player is assigned to an SANFL team. This is either the SANFL they were drafted from, or (for interstate recruits) a mini-draft is held, with selections in reverse order of the ladder of that year.
I'm not perfect. I'm what perfect aspires to become

Fremantle/WCE took a proposition to the WAFL last week to have their own dedicated reserves sides and were knocked back.

yeah, imo it is a pretty archaic system really - how is a young player expected to improve when he has to go back and play in a different team, under a different coaching style, game plan, probably in a different position .
in terms of the afl clubs, a reserves team is obviously a better scenario.
in terms of the integrity of the sanfl competition, i honestly dont think it would hurt it that much. only 1/3 to 1/2 of the team would actually be made up of afl players at any given time, so i dont think they would win every premiership or anything like that, although i doubt they would ever miss the finals, just due to the advantages that better facilities and coaching would allow.

in terms of grounds, i honestly think this would be the least of anyone's problems. grounds these days are prepared extremely well - think of the MCG currently - 2 or 3 games a week, then they might have a international soccer game during the week. the extra games wouldn't affect it much. in fact a lot of the foxtel cup games and U18 are currently being played as curtain raisers to AFL games, so i dont think this would be an issue. the main issue would be that there is no financial reward for the AFL to do this imo.
