the 80 odd goals a season (129 in 1993) that modra kicked still need to be kicked by someone.

premiers
2003 Bris Lions - lynch, 78, 2nd
2004 Port Adelaide, treadres, 81, 3rd
2005 Sydney, hall, 80, 1st
2006 West Coast lynch, 65, 8th
2007 Geelong - mooney 67 goals, 4th in coleman

now tell me that you dont need a good go-to forward thats going to kick you a lot of goals to win a premiership (possible exception is west coase 2006)

a massive misnomer about modern football

also ask me why the crows have made 4 prelims in recent memory, and not any grand finals? lack of a go-to forward in every case

It doesn't matter a jot who kicks them, as long as someone does. If your team is reliant upon the gun full forward then you're in trouble (richmond? carlton?). Far better for everyone to be chipping in on a regular basis for a number of reasons, one of which is you're automatically harder to defend against.
Pardon me, but I think you'll find that's a shovel. See you next Tuesday!

Brisbane.

I second Pete's motion though, when we won the GF in 06 (YAY) it was, in part, due to Lynch's good form through the year, but it wasn't the only reason we won - if it was anything, it was our gun midfield.

And Adam Hunter :D

I don't quite understand that.

So you can lack a go-to forward all year, make the 8, win finals and make your way in to a prelim - but the reason you don't win one more game to get to the grand final is lacking a go-to forward?

I have no idea how you came to think that's what I was saying.

A good offensive unit should never have to mostly rely on one part of that unit ie a full-forward. If one part falls over then another part should be able to cover for it.

This discussion mainly came about cos Scott mentioned Tony Modra and I think he spent more time worrying about his hair and who would be his next step ladder than anything else (ok maybe a slight exaggeration), and it's then evolved into the position of full forward itself having too much emphasis IMO (forget modra).

ok, calm down folks.

what i was saying was this.

a good full forward does not make a team. put two of the best forwards of the game at crap clubs (richo richmond fev carlton) and the teams will still struggle.

similarly, a team can win the premiership without a good forward - they still need a premiership winning midfield, and a solid defence.

BUT

if, for instance, you put matthew pavlich or someone like that at the goalfront of the crows for the last 5 years, would their team be better? obviously yes.

what about if, from the crows 2005 team where they lost by a kick to west coast in the prelim final, you traded simon goodwin for pavlich.

do you reckon that the midfield would have been able to cover this to an extent where pavlich would still be a better option? my answer is obviously yes.

so what i am saying, is if you put a gun forward at the crows in addition to the rest of them, they would probably have made a grand final.

a forward does not make a team, but its very hard to be a good team without a good forward kicking goals - the crows of recent years are a possible exception to this

everyone was already calm benny the cunt :)

I think you're kinda missing what I'm suggesting tho...

1 Forward kicking most of the goals

or

the entire forward line sharing the load

which do you reckon is more desirable?

Another factor I think gets overlooked a lot is the delivery the gun forwards are getting. Make a lead, have the ball delivered on a platter, kick it thru the big sticks. Tuff life at FF. I rate a forward a lot more if he can make goals out of seemingly nothing.

In the interest of niggling Scott (hi mate!), one thing I disliked about Modra was his 'lead' seemed to be along the lines of 'stay 5 metres back and wait for the bloke's shoulders to present themselves' :P Good thing his team mates knew he was a show pony and delivered as such :P

I both like and dislike that aspect of the game. It looks freaking awesome (especially up the refs back lol how gold was that?!?), but it kinda looks like cheating to me if you have to climb all over the bloke who did the right thing by getting in front.

Anyhoo, it's a showdown this week? Port will get flogged :P

I agree - a good forward is needed - just as a good midfield and defence etc..

But I don't agree that the reason the Crows didnt make the grand finals was from lacking a key forward.
