This can only be German Engineering!

Have you ever seen a river over a river?..

Even after you see it, it is still hard to believe!
Water Bridge in Germany. What a feat!
Six years, 500 million euros, 918 meters long.......now this is engineering!
This is a channel-bridge over the River Elbe and joins the former East and West Germany , as part of the unification project. It is located in the city of Magdeburg , near Berlin
The photo was taken on the day of inauguration...

To those who appreciate engineering projects, here's a puzzle for you armchair engineers and physicists
Question:
Did that bridge have to be designed to withstand the additional weight of ship and barge traffic, or just the weight of the water?

Spoiler:
Answer:
It only needs to be designed to withstand the weight of the water!
Why? A ship always displaces an amount of water that weighs the same as the ship, regardless of how heavily a ship may be loaded.

lol harps. Just where do you think the the weight of the ship go?

I float in water (just),but i assure you, if you placed a bath on some scales and I jumped in the bath, even tho I floated the scales would still register the additional weight.

All that happens is that the water level rises, it doesn't magically make the weight disappear.

Very cool bridge tho.

It is Different a bath is an enclosed area , where as with this bridge there is less water when a boat is going through it ,Displacement of water .The weight of the boat/ship pushes that weight in water out .

depends how its designed harps, if there is not a smooth flow of water out of there, you're going to get that weight on the bridge.

I know what you're saying tho

doesn't mean I don't think they may allowances for additional weight.

i would say that there would be locks at at least one end, probably both, which would mean that the weight would have to be taken into account

This is really cool, so for argument's sake, where exactly is the weight distributed to along the bridge as the ship sails??? Is it directly under the ship, or along the entire length of the channel???
What?, poker without the river??, you've just made my dreams come true!!!

assuming it has locks at either end, then if you put a ship in the water, the water level rises slightly, and the water displaced is equal to the weight of the ship.

this water is displaced evenly along the whole bridge so the weight will be borne by the whole bridge equally

if it is free flowing it gets more complicated, but i doubt it is
