G'day ,
Did i play this wrong ?
Player had personally chipped me up from around 7k to 28k, Was very loose, Had not long before called an all-in for 26k pre-flop with J 8 off a rivered a straight. He had about 80k.

Blinds 500 , 1000 , 100 ante's , player in question SB , Me cutoff . 6 handed

dealt to me A K off "damn i hate it "

sb posts blind
bb " " " "
under gun calls
UNG + 1 folds
Me raise to 6k
dealer folds
sb calls
fold
fold

flop [ 3h ] [ 8s ] [ 7h ]
sb checks
me raise 6k
sb calls

turn [ 8h ]
sb checks
me raise 6k
sb calls

river [ 10h ]
sb all-in
I fold

He shows [ Jc ] [ 5h ]
for a flush on river

What should I have done differently ?
[_]) cheers

preflop, the pot is 3100

personally, a bet of 2.5x + 1 for each limper should be enough at this stage of the tourney, so i like a bet of something like 3500-4500 is better, i think 6k is a little big preflop.

by betting a little smaller it allows you more wiggle room postflop.

on the flop, the pot is roughly 15k and you bet 6k again.

to me, if someone bets the same on the flop as they do preflop, this generally means weakness. betting 1/3 to 1/2 pot is generally ok, but i would make it bigger than your preflop raise size. as played, because you went 6k preflop, i think something like 7.5 would be ok on the flop.

but if you had raised to 3.5 preflop, the pot is now only 10k instead of 15k, and now your bet of 6k looks stronger, and you have also saved yourself 2.5k.

on the turn i think it is an ok card to fire again, because it doesnt change anything - if you were behind then you still are.

but once again, betting the same amount looks pretty weak here. if you are going to play, you probably have to shove the turn with your stack size, otherwise just give up and check fold and preserve the rest of your stack.

sorry thats a big long, hope it helps

I think you did ok Harps...

There are players that won't fold no matter how hard you bet, you made value bets with a good hand in position they had air until the river. If they are likely to fold then benny the cunt is right increase the pot, if they don't fold then saving chips for a better hand is a better play. I think this player wouldn't fold based on the earlier hand. Gotta love those that will play any 2 suited...

As Andrew said, half the issue is the fact you hate AK.

Try not hating it!

here is a fantastic article on how to play AK - you'll hate it a lot less after this.

i have the opposite problem in that i play it like aces most of the time. this is completely fine most of the time, as it stacks up pretty well even against QQ+, AK+, but in tourneys it sometimes gets me into flip situations when i dont need to.

some of the TPE pros advocate flatting it in position when you are deep because it disguises the strength of the hand, but this is something i need to work on i think, even if it is just to balance my calling range
