Yeah I get edited and warned for making the slightest positive comment about "them" yet then 888PL actively pursue dialogue to set up a major event around the whole thing! Hence my "I'm confused" post earlier...
Also, I seem to remember suggesting some type of match to find Australia's best 'pub poker player' many months ago on here and was completely shut down because no one wanted to offer 'support / coverage' of other leagues... Yet after yesterday (and the win of "the other leagues" player on Thursday night) they are all keen.
BTW, I do think it's a great idea. As mentioned in my previous posts on such a tournament many players try other leagues or venues to refresh themselves from playing the same old people. Co-operation to work together would be great. Players will still support the league they feel most comfortable playing at the end of the day. I don't think (as I assume 888 and "the other league" agree given the discussion already taken place) that there is any marketing risk as suggested previously and in fact I think it can be positive for both or others that may participate.
I feel somewhat as a catalyst for this as I, like many others, float between the leagues picking the games we want to play and I actively marketed both the Thursday and Sunday games to "the other league" players and they confirmed today that this was a major factor to their participation. (So sorry Edith and your team!) But in the end I think that this is only good for 888PL and their players ("a" - by actually just tipping the break even at both Thursday and Saturday events thus 888 for not losing out and "b" by giving 888 players the opportunity to experience playing against people they may not normally encounter).
Also, on the actual event I think that this could be a significant event and could be held. I know there has been some discussion around an event similar to the Berri Deepstack weekend away and this might fit that bill. Somewhere, like the Weintal in Tanunda where there is sufficient accommodation for a two day event could be the go... But I guess the biggest question that would need to be answered is who's cutting the cards? - The SB or C/O?![]()
I hope this gets off the ground and I wish you all good luck!
Hi Matt,
First off your comment was promoting another league as better than 888PL (or could be perceived that way) and as this is an 888PL tool I won't have this happen, secondly I did this as a favour as well as I am sure that you would have started a very large flame war with that very inocuous comment. I am more than happy to put it back up if you are happy to wear the recriminations that may fall you way from your 888PL peers that attend this forum?
The only reason that I am even considering this event now is because staunch supporters of another league have visited this forum and have acted in a very cordial and respectful manner. This was a big positive in me moving forward with this idea, secondly, because these players won a teams event yesterday and now the floodgates have opened and 888PL (and it's players) must defend our honor and integrity and we must find out which league has the better players. This is something I am willing to do in SA only as obviously 888PL hold the upper hand in this event (simply due to volume of players to choose from and past results of SA players).
The above is not cocky just simple fact, we have a far greater pool of numbers to pull from and several players who have exemplary results and hence why we must decide on qualification criteria.
This events is not aimed (nor was it guided by league "floaters") instead it is designed for and with the staunch supporters of both leagues in mind. The supreme loyal supporters who refuse to play anywhere that doesn't host their league. And whilst I appreciate the offer of a venue in the BG area I think the most neutral area for this will be the southern or CBD suburbs of Adelaide as APL and 888PL both have a presence in these regions.
