HS Rolls (and why would u do this in a game?)

Postby AJG » Thu Aug 19, 2010 3:22 pm

Maybe you have seen this before, esp if you watch the series each year:

Why on earth would you do what Laliberte does in this video??
You have to be nuts!

Reignites a debate i was having amongst some other players, as to whether the High Stakes Poker TV series is really played for so much, or perhaps the amounts on the table are actually multipled by some factor to make for better TV?
Even though Brunson makes the comment about how much money is involved, Im not sure Im convinced its all real...

I get that online is a little different (even guys like Antonius and Ivey, Durrrr and Isildur1 play multiple tables), but I saw a vid where Antonius says to play those stakes, you really need a BR of $300M+ (and comments he thinks ppl usually underestimate how many buyins you need, well thats his implication). Amazing comment he makes in same vid, that going back to $300/$600 was relaxing for him! wow! Also he beleive its possible to go on a $100M downswing...

So what kind of BR do you need to be playing $1M+ pots live?

Even at $200K buyin, most BR management would require you have $20M+...
Seriously do THAT many players have this kind of roll?? Given even the most successful players have tournament earnings only 1/2 that (or less - Ivey's on top @ $12.6M)...
Sure the Iveys, Antonius' and Durrrs et al, but there seems alot of different players in all these High Stakes and Million $ Cash game series etc, can they all have such huge rolls? (and there are quite a few different HS series from Europe and the UK not only the US)

Also consider these guys would have rather large expenses, and this $20M+ minimum is just pure poker roll... Not like their net worth or anything...
So say they are worth even $30M (which would be generous for alot of them imho), do they really put 1/2 or more of their net worth into a poker BR?? Or sit down at these tables as if they had such a roll?

Or is it just that they play these games/series less often, so are prepared to buyin more for a higher % of their BR? (say usually play a $50K buyin or something)
But rarely do they look out of their comfort zone, so either there are alot more players out there worth alot more than I thought, or (atleast some of) these HS poker series kinda 'fiddle' with the stakes....
Image ...11.59% of bad beat stories are just misplayed hands ...

I'm not reading that wall of text, but:

Guy is like, the richest person alive. Chopping a $1.2m pot is nothing to him, he doesn't need any more money - the dude is set for life. Its like Caleb's sig, going from 48m to 50m is not going to make a difference.

I've seen the clip before, it looks like he's just being a nice guy cos David is pretty wtf when he gets called.

I heard somewhere some players get backing from consortium's for some of those games. Would make sense.

I'm sure some guys just roll themselves tho.

They also "run it twice" style to smooth the variance I believe.

That is a lot of questions!!

It is worth noting they are never risking their WHOLE bankroll - just a decent amount of $ for me and you.

I hope it is real - i think it is real.

I think, considering their wealth is made from poker (excluding the super rich that do not need to consider the impact of losing 1,5 10 million because they do not feel the impact of losing it) they perhaps should mix their Bank roll and net worth - they are so tied together.

Ok, gotta go to Ringers......tbc
May all your pain be champagne!
