in my mind that is a lot harder than a freestyle drum solo (although adam may correct me) because you actually have to keep time for the rest of the band

50/50. Keeping time is as natural as breathing, so it doesn't make it harder.
I personally find straight drum solo's harder to replicate due to the lack of consistency in the style, where as with song drumming, there is always structure (being a song) and a great deal of repitition. Tics and Leeches for example, is basically the one beat all the way through, just with variances here and there.
That being said, any clown can cut sick on a drum kit, but to put something mindblowingly awesome into an actual song requires that extra level of depth.
