I forget the basic stuff when I start to become very competitive... which happened towards the end of last season. I was so focussed on making sure I reached one of the semi-finals that strategy (and basics) went out the window. I woudn't peform well, I'd become disheartened, wasn't focussed, would play again, wouldn't perform well and the cycle continued.

Reading the books and going back to basics has really helped... have been playing well over the past week or so. I even won my first 888PL freeroll today... finally! :) (was always the bridesmaid, never the bride!)

Doyle's super systems is rather outdated and covers a broader range of poker variants. If you're after a great Texas Hold'em book, don't go past Daniel Negreanu's Power Hold'em Strategy. Although the strategies discussed in the 300 or so pages mainly work with properly structured tourneys and deepstacks, there are many aspects you can incorporate into your live play at 888PL venues. This book however, is for the more advanced poker player.

If you just want a basic beginner's book that re-enforces seemingly obvious strategies (as obvious as it may appear, it will improve your game) try reading Crash course in beating Texas hold'em by Avery Cardoza, of the Cardoza publishing empire (producers of books such as Doyle's super/system).

Im starting to really like you Trishan, hard to believe you and that whingeing "frustrated" are the same person!

Anyone who pokes fun at themselves and can take a joke made about them and reply positively with a snappy comeback is a.o.k in my books! 8-)

They where talking about books on the WPT. many, if not all those who had written books still said that super systems was still the bible for poker players.

My Oldman once gave me some advice, but I don`t remember it, I was a know it all teenager at the time. But one thing he did say to me and I always think of it is " never mistake your ability with your ambition " still don`t know what the old codger was on about. :?

Not a very avid reader either. :o When will the DVD be out  lol
