another sad side effect of the floods

Postby krunchie » Fri Jan 28, 2011 8:37 pm

So i live on the banks of the mighty murray at waikerie in SA

We have seen the river rise well over a meter in the past few weeks and the experts see the river getting at least 1.5m higher soon.

One of the unfortunate side effects of the increased flow is black water, which is low oxygenated water ( im no expert so i wont try to explain more)

This black water is seeing a bit of a fish kill and the attached photo is a prime example

the picutre attached taken 5pm tonight at my local river front, the 3 boys pictured swam out a ways to investigate a large floating object only to find a masive cod floating upside down, having lost its fight with black water.

best estimates are 90 pounds and 1.2m in length

if you look in the back ground of the photo you will see a metal rail, this is actualy a hand rail for a jetty that house boats can use to dock and shop etc, only 2 months ago this jetty was 1/2m above water and now the hand rail is about to go

The whole thing was pretty sad realy, who knows how old this monster was, the funniest thing was wathcing the old fisher dudes wanting to deposit it in the boot of a near by car but knowing they couldnt in public as removal of cod from the murray is illegal, when i left the boys were swiming the carcus back out to float away.

In Victoria, Murray cod have a bag-possession limit of two, a minimum legal length of 60cm and a maximum legal length of 100cm (has to be cod season though. )My father inlaw has a 130cm cod mounted on his wall that he caught ast Albury in 1958

My Favourite weekend of the year is cod opening, great to camp on the banks for a week and catch this majestic fish. I always throw back any as well. Others I camp with keep a few to eat but Iam in it for the sport

unfortunatley SA is much harsher in its laws, complete ban on removal of cod from the murray, still fun to catch though
