Discussion on State Finals - Flights or all one seating.

Postby Garth Kay » Fri Dec 12, 2008 9:13 am

Now this won't affect our South Australian Counterparts so much as it takes forty minutes to drive from one side of Adelaide to the other, but it is open for debate anyway.

As finalists what would you prefer, a flight system State Finals that is fairly central to all (in Metro area) or possibly a regional centre, such as Bendigo, Geelong or in SA's case F/Pen hills or Barossa Gawler OR somewhere that may require some additional driving perhaps one to two hours maximum for most of the regional qualifiers but allows all finalists to be seated in one flight.

I have received three complaints about Dingley hosting another final but I have also received numerous email and comments that players prefer the one flight system. Dingley is the only venue large enough to host our Finals in a one flight system.

garth, my person opinion is that it is better to have all people seated at 1 time if possible, although this seems to severely limit the number of venues

close-in regional venues would also be excellent i reckon, and im sure somewhere like the vine inn would nearly be big enough to hold it in a single flight

Damn it, I forgot to include the cause:

"Personal opinions are not required if your name is BennyMacca"

I noticed you didn't vote??

What's the go with that?

Vine Inn wasn't what I had in mind, something in Gawler possibly, I can just hear the screaming from the Metro South hordes now.

is that because you already knew my opinion, or because i have an opinion on everything? :D

well we all had to go to woodcroft, so i think its fair to share the love around.

not sure if any of the gawler venues would be big enough to hold a state finals, certainly none with a single flight

I don't mind either way.

1 Flight is the preferred option but if there's not enough venues large enough that's just the way it is.

At the moment it's rare that we know a Finals venue before the season starts so surely there's a level of expectation it could be anywhere and players should be prepared for that. Regional players will likely complain unless it's in their region. They live in the country whereas most others don't, so who's responsible for that? Certainly not the NPL.

I actually think it adds to the whole day if you have to travel a little, kinda like a road trip. First state final here in SA was the other end of the outer metro to where I live but a bunch of us got up early and car pooled and we got to have a decent chat about strategies and the like over our morning coffee and red bull.

The only major problem I can forsee is with it being a Championship weekend and the need for enough accomodation to be nearby for those that do decide to make the trip from the regional areas.
Pardon me, but I think you'll find that's a shovel. See you next Tuesday!

firstly, this is a global announcement, so i can't usually click reply

unless, i got to a thread where i can post, and click on the global announcement from there. wierd.

secondly, pete i agree, i love getting up early in the morning and having to drive - it sort of makes it a special event, sort of like going to a grand final, which i suppose it is of sorts.

and i think the majority of regional players dont actually mind the travelling - they are used to it and accept it as a fact of life.

lol i remember talking to some city friends once and i was saying that i used to travel from Freeling (north of gawler) to Adelaide every day for uni, and the trip would take about 90 minutes from when i left to when i was in lecture.

and they were like WOW, i have never driven anywhere that takes me longer than like 20 mins.

some of them wont go to the other side of the city because it was too far!

Pete,

Adelaide People: 15 minutes down the road is too far away. I.E: Nathan Butler's response to my statement: "We could go to Marion Cinemas" whilst we were having dinner on Rundle - "That's AGGGGEEEEEESSSSSSS away"

Melbourne People: I feel like hitting the Casino or going out for a nice dinner. Yeah, let's go to Crown it's ONLY an hours drive.

Adelaide has accommodation available everywhere and I am sure a ten minute drive to and from the venue from a motel isn't that bad.

You know it's all relative Garth :)

What is a "distance" to us isn't a distance to you (Victorians).

On the flip side, I'd travel anywhere for a good time, good poker, and a a laugh (and a poker DVD)

Just so we are all aware.

I was born in Victoria, moved to Qld at the age of two, then spent most of my adolescent life (high school years) growing up in NSW. Went to Uni in Queensland and then moved to Melbourne to look after my grandmother.

After several years in Melbourne my parents decided to purchase hotels in the Latrobe Valley, then I moved to Morwell/Churchill to work in the pub trade.

I was then hired by some shitty poker league that both my brother and I left after we got sick of the lies to players and the deception and the fact we were paid peanuts.

I was then picked up by a great company that initally had the idea to send me to Tasmania to take on operations in that little state, within two weeks it was decided that my "skills and talents" would be better served in South Australia.

SA accepted me and then adopted me, my parents and my brother now work in Western Australia and i haven't seen them in over a year and a half now. They are now a big part of the Broome WA community.

So we are a family of many different states and I don't buy into the state rivalry nor do I declare I am of the state od ???. I am Australian.
