I know a few of the regulars on here have mentioned just how bad telstra internet is but I couldnt belive this.
Got talking to a mate last night over the poker table regarding plans, becuse he was telling me he was waiting for next week to start his downloads again,
and he told me the plan he is on.
( granted he is a farmer that didnt shop around and just wanted internet for emails, websurfing and now poker )
2 year plan with big pond, free modem chucked in ( this is what sold him )
256k speed
$9.95 per month for the first 12 months and then $29.95 for the second.
But what i couldnt belive is that his downloads totaled 800kb
No wonder he was maxing the downloads out in no time.
Poor bastard, should have seen his face when maccatak and I told him what you could get for similar money from internode or adam.
I guess a contract is a contract he is screwed for 2yrs yes ?

Contracts are contracts.
Unless you demand about a thousand times to speak to their consumer relations department who will probably let you out of it.
I did not tell you that.
That would then mean changing provider though which is a pain in itself.
Might be best to see if he is serviceable with another provider first.

Pardon me, but I think you'll find that's a shovel. See you next Tuesday!

Unfortunatly Nugget has been sold something that smells like roses but is actually something else.
A quick check of the bigpuddle plan page shos the $29.95 plan have a 200mb allowance + .15cents per mb over the allowance, charging both up and downloads included, as a qualifing customer the 1st 12 months are at a reduced rate.
He has a few options open to him:-
He can upgrade his plan to the 12gb plan with no excess charges for $59.95pm and I would expect as a quailified customer he would get the 1st 12 months for 1/2 price.
The option is to cancel the contract which will cost him $360 or a pro rata amount depending on how long the contract has left to run.
Its the service providers who are at fault for offering such a low download plan that is next to useless for net surfing, at best its good for casual email.

Re: Internetz
their 12 gig plan is about as good as it gets for telstra
but considering i now get 40 gig a month for 10 bucks less with adam, it still is a pretty crappy deal
i remember dodo having an adsl2+ plan that gave you 70meg, thats right, 70meg not gig, per month. not sure if they still do it, but that is blatantly misleading

Re: Internetz
Please don't interpret this as me sticking up for Telstra (because that will NEVER happen) but there ARE plenty of internet users who pretty much only want it to email rellies etc.
Old people seem to be the main offenders there.
It's up to the customer to shop around and ask questions before agreeing to anything, and obviously that doesn't just apply to internet.
I don't doubt there was a small element of 'everything used to have to go through Telecom so I'll just ask them because that's what I'm used to doing'.

this would be telstra's main marketing strategy i reckon - make it as easy as possible for existing telstra customers to sign up with them on big plans, and charge them through the nose because they dont know any different

Re: Internetz
as far as i know, you shouldn't ever need a static IP address for general browsing
if you are accessing your computer remotely or have a server or soemthing, then you will want a static IP
