Todd Rivers wrote:OK, i have a question that needs an experts opinion/answer.
Available info: I live 10kms from nearest town.
My Dial-up speed = 31.2kpbs (MAX!)
My wireless optus broadband speed = 56.1kpbs (@ home and even Renmark/Berri town centres) and it gets about 400mpbs when in Adelaide at absolute max.
How the hell can i get even "slow" speeds around 128kpbs - 256kpbs , which even though Ethiopia has faster speeds, that will still save me 3/4 of the time it takes me to do everything now.
eg. Download a 3-4MB song takes about 7-8 minutes.
Download a 450kb PDF document takes about 90 seconds.
Download a "Flash player" 3 minute clip from you-tube ect takes about 10 minutes.
Download Pirates 2: Stagnettis Revenge (Jesse Jane flick - you know!)
a 1.5 GB movie takes about a week with the phone connected 24 hours a day! LOL
Can someone help?!!!
PLEEAASE!!
You need to look into Sat Broadband the ar a few companies that offer it one that come to mind is Activa8, if standard adsl bb is not avalable in your area you may be covered by the federal government broadband guarantee and qualify foe free installation.
Give Sparc Electronics from waikerie a call he's in the rland phn book

Those are pretty sh!te peak/off peak hours.
In your humble opinion but it suits me as I'm up at 5am most days not laying around in be sleeping like others.

Todd...
Step 1 is to ignore whatever gundog says. Do not get Satellite.
Step 2 is to send me a pm, I work for optus so can probably help you troubleshoot as the product you have is one of the products I support.

Pardon me, but I think you'll find that's a shovel. See you next Tuesday!

Unfortunatly we dont get 3G coverage in the bush I too have mobile BB and at best it just above dial up most days.
Do not get Satellite.
Why Not ?
In some cases it the only BB option, one of my staff has no access to adsl service because of the small rural exchange limited subscribers, therefore telstra has no plans to provide any BB service, also even Telsta's NextG service is at best unrealiable.
They are considering the Sat option.
Sometime Pete us country people have to endure third world BB options, we are still waiting for ADSL2 and heaven forbid Naked DSL.
And Kevins grand internet plan is 5 to 10 years away for the bush pffft.

Pfff, internet will probably be on a space-age frequency or bouncing off satellites by then and we wont need wires at all....oh wait.....

Re: Internetz
gundog the dial-up speed you mention is basically the 2G mobile network (old and slow). Satellite would then be your best option of a quicker internet however the latency is disgusting.
Todd are you also in the country?
If so, which area? I can check the coverage maps for these things (actual coverage maps, not the bs that sales use).

Re: Internetz
ah ok yep.
Todd, I can help with your settings while you're in Adelaide and I can double check the coverage for your exact address (or alternatively, the addresses where you use it the most) in the riverland.
Send me a pm with the relevant address details and I can check some things for you and then give you a definite yes/no as to if I can improve those speeds for you.
More often than not, there is something we can do.
