bennymacca wrote:bob, Naked DSL is a new type of ADSL2+ where you dont need a home phone connection for the internet to work.

in place of a home phone, you get a voip phone instead, and all of your phone traffic runs over the internet rather than in the telephone bandwidth.

this is great for those of us that really only have a home phone because of the need for the internet. it is also much cheaper, as the phone call rates are cheaper, and there is no line rental either.

the reason some of us aren't on this is because some households cannot get adsl2+, only standard adsl. (if you are on a rim, paired gain or too far from the exchange)

so by definition, naked dsl == voip phone

That's not entirely true.

There is absolutely no need to have any kind of voip active with naked dsl, nor is it a requirement. Unless of course you still want to have to hold onto some kind of phone to make calls and don't mind still having to pay for doing so.

Tell everyone to get on skype or xfire or whatever and just use a headset. It's free.

The 'naked' part of naked dsl simply means the voice component of the total package (as we currently know it) has been removed and therefore it does not have a dialtone. In short, in the telephone exchange it's not connected to the telephone part - only the internet part.

This also frees up the bandwidth that was reserved for the voice communication and makes it available for internet data communication.

This also means you can be further from the telephone exchange and still get it and your overall connection speed may increase.
Pardon me, but I think you'll find that's a shovel. See you next Tuesday!

Yes.

The maximum limits of ADSL2+ haven't increased, you're just more likely to get a little bit closer to the maximum than you were before.

you are right pete, there is no requirement for you to get a voip phone. but most, if not all naked dsl packages have some sort of included voip calls a month. i think for adam its 5 bucks a month, and for internode it might be 10 bucks a month.

in my opinion, skype by itself is not an adequate solution, especially when it comes to emergency calls. with voip the emergency calls still work, although you have to sign up to a register that lists your number and address. i am not sure whether skype allow you to do this, i suspect not.

im not sure what you mean by this pete. the voice channels in a phone line operate in the 0-4Khz band, wheras the adsl carrier frequencies are up between 100Khz and 1MHz.

the bandwidth required for voice communication would be minute compared to that of a adsl2+ connection

Adam ADSL2+ & Telstra Budget

Naked setup & VOIP phone/modem?

DO IT!!!!

i think the only downside is that your phone number will be different. other than that, i dont see why anyone wouldn't do it (unless you are on a rim like me and can't get adsl2 :( )

Don't care about the phone number being different, we only get Indians calling anyway

So do you suggest sticking with Adam and buying a VOIP phone? Or do they have some packages?

You can get the service without getting the voip phone benny the cunt. Having a voip phone is merely an option that you can choose, and yes they all seem to offer it as a bundle.

If it's an emergency you'd better hope you are home when that emergency happens. Use your mobile. Even if you are suspended due to non payment 000 should still work, legal requirement or some such thing.

Additional max speed from losing the analogue voice service won't be a lot, that's correct. But it has a flow on effect in that it's no longer something that can cause issues.

The benefits of being able to receive the service from further away are more evident with naked extreme (which is what internode call that particular type of service).

From internodes website....

"No distance limits apply to NakedExtreme ADSL2+."

Naked extreme is slightly different to standard naked, but from a customer perspective it's best described as an extra 4 Megabits per second added to the theoretical maximum speed (24Mbps instead of 20Mbps).

It's important to remember that neither Internode nor Adam count upload traffic as part of the data allowance. So for anyone who is currently with some of the, shall we say, larger companies - it's better for you to make the switch anyway.

well said pete, total agreeance here.

i am guessing you are talking about not having to worry about line filters and the like, which is always a good thing

i would like to see the technical explanation as to why this is the case. or if its just marketing. whirlpool will probably have it, but i cant be bothered looking at the moment, so ill just take your word for it.

you say "use your mobile", but i like to think that if my mobile is flat or down the other end of the house where the baddy man is at the time, or the part of the house that is on fire, that i could dial 000 from a phone in my house.

i dont think this is a requirement for skype phones.

this is very true.

i think the consensus should be - if you use more than 5 gig a month on the internet, and you are NOT with either adam or internode, then you are flushing money down the toilet for no good reason.

bundled packages are generally not that much cheaper, unless you use the home phone a lot. but if you use the home phone a lot, then why dont you have a capped mobile plan instead...

I guess we all have to move with the times and this topic is just another page in our lives that will alter our way of communication. ;)

If only Alexander Bell had a little more foresight he could have included all the above and we would'nt have this problem today, or wouuld we? :o

I thought it was great when I had my first Commodore and a brick type mobile phone that never broke no matter what you did with it. :D

Bacon, would you mind if I had a look at what your after when you get whatever it is going so I can see it in the flesh?

And Big Pete, why am I not surprised to see that you're not only a spelling legend, you're a computer legend too.

It's a shame you haven't mastered the game of No Limit Holdem. I suppose time will tell in that area once you get your drinking of Carlsberg down to a finer art M8. ;)
Remember, It takes 8 muscles to smile :D and 40 to frown :(
