Ottowa (sp?)

And from memory, it's the frequency of the light from the sun, and the way the earths atmosphere reflects that. Art, year 12.

2/3 aint bad david - the sky is blue because nitrogen and other gases such as water vapour absorb light of shorter wavelengths (blue) and scatter it in different directions, while letting the longer wavelengths pass straight through the atmosphere.

(i know most people wont care, but i have a doubles electrical/electronics engineering and physics, so i am one of the nerds that do care! :geek: )

Yes, I'd say that's more than 2/3 ....

Wavelength = frequency.

wavelength does not = frequency

frequency = number of times a wave repeats over time (eg: one wave per second)

wavelength and frequency are related.

The shorter the wavelength the higher the frequency

the longer the wavelength the lower the frequency

E.g. Say you wavelength is 1cm, in 1m that is a frequency of 100.

Now if you wavelength is 10cm, in 1m, that is a frequency of 10.

I am not using seconds here. just for ease of illustration.

For the old physics memories.
frequency = 1/wavelength.
Load "*" ,8,1
Run

getting technical here for a second

wavelength and frequency are proportional to each other. the constant of proportionality is the speed of light in the media that the wave is travelling in, which in air (vacuum) is 3x10^8 metres/second

i.e wavelength = frequency/speed of light

secondly, scattering and reflecting are subtlety different things = reflection typically means that light coming from a certain direction gets reflected in some other direction, i.e there is a relationship between incoming and outgoing angles.

scattering is where light coming from a certain direction gets scattered in all different directions. there is usually a probability that an incoming light wave will get scattered in a certain direction.
