I think the November Nine definitely worked. The hype worked on me, and as Mafau said, it worked for the masses.
The $40k anniversary event started yesterday and there were already some disgustingly bad played hands in the first level. Starting stacks were 120k at 200/400/50, so 300BBs.
Tony G had AsAc and he put it all in on a flop of 5d 7d x vs 8d 6d.
He holds.
An unknown had AA and shoved to a turn bet of 9,200. As in, his entire 112,000 stack. He ran into a 99 on a 922 flop.
Laak doubled when he shoved all in on a 8J4 flop with 8s, which was snapped by AA.

if i remember correctly he actually came third in wsop europes main event before the november nine, in the 4 month break, this result made him favorite to win

Congratulations to Thang Luu - Event #3 Champion ($263,135)
It's been a year of records so far at the 2009 WSOP and only fitting that Event #3, $1,500 Omaha 8-or-Better, concluded with another history-making performance. Last year's defending champion, Thang Luu, eclipsed a record-setting field of 918 entrants to capture his second gold bracelet! Not only is this Luu's second bracelet, it's his second in the same event in consectutive years. Back in 2007, Luu took second place in this same event for $147,726. Last year, Luu topped that performance with a win in the same event for $243,342 in what was the largest Omaha tournament ever played.
This year, Luu came out on top of a larger field than last year and earned himself $263,135. In total, Thang's earned over $650,000 for all three of those finishes! As Nolan Dalla mentioned, "This feat has only been equalled by Johnny Chan back in the 1980s." Luu was the chip leader after Day 1 finished up and as of yesterday, claimed that he was feeling really good about this tournament. He was never really the big stack at the final table, but drove the action and picked his spots well. When play got down to three handed, Luu simply took over and began crushing the competition. From there, it was smooth sailing. Congratulations to Thang Luu for his win and amazing back-to-back-to-back performances!
That's an incredible feat.

Vitaly Lunkin wins Event #2, $40,000 No-Limit Hold'em ($1,891,012), Isaac Haxton Eliminated in 2nd Place ($1,1168,566)
Hand #167
Vitaly Lunkin has the button. He limps in and Haxton raises an additional 600,000. Lunkin makes the call.
The flop is [Qd][Td][8d] . Haxton leads out for 1,200,000, Lunkin moves all in and Haxton calls all in for 5,635,000.
Haxton [3d][8c]
Lunkin [As][Ah]
The turn is the [7c], no help for Haxton, who needs a diamond, an eight or a three to keep his bracelet hopes alive. The river, though, is the [Ks] and Vitaly Lunkin wins the tournament, his friends rushing the table to embrace him. They wrap Lunkin in a Russian flag as they celebrate.
Haxton earns $1,168,566 for his runner-up finish while Lunkin takes home $1,891,012 and his second WSOP bracelet.

Re: WSOP begins today
From http://www.pokerlistings.com :
$1k NL Hold'em - 127 Burros To Go
The Stimulus Event is a shell of what it once was. Just thirteen tables remain and things are about to get crazier.
After this next break is up, players will return to see the 4,000/8,000 level. What this means is that in a tournament where 160 big blinds once was the average it will now be 15 big blinds. Of course this is leading to several players complaining about the structure.
Luckily for the tournament staff, most people left don't even know what a structure is, or else they might be facing a hoard of angry poker players wielding pitchforks and torches.

Deuce to Seven Draw Lowball (No-Limit) (Event 8)
The Phils Arrive
Two more players showed up and you just might know who they are. Phil Hellmuth is now seated over at Marco Traniello's table and Phil Ivey is sitting with Gavin Smith and Daniel Negreanu. Ivey sat down, got his first hand, looked at his cards, and then asked "What game is this?" The table laughed while the dealer informed Ivey of the game. Ivey then looked at his chips and was very surprised. "Where'd all my chips go?!?!" he questioned. The dealer then had to explain how the triple chance worked and how you have two optional add-ons. "I wanna rebuy." said Ivey. "You can't until after the hand." replied the dealer. "Gosh, how disruptive are you to a game!" exclaimed Gavin Smith. Ivey then raised and took the pot.
