After 20 minutes or so of being idle, you're logged out.

Laura,

The forum is "stateless"

Basically, if you log on, it assumes you're there for 20 minutes. If you don't do anything, it assumes you've logged off. If you do something (click a link, or something) it resets the 20 minute timer and says you're online.

But if you open up a really long page, and take 4 hours to read it, the forum doesn't know you're sitting there for 4 hours unless you actually do something :)

Correct.

The site doesn't know you're sitting there typing. Until you interact with the site, it considers you dormant.
