I'm curious to know peoples thoughts on this topic.

For those who may not be aware, a dry side pot is when there's 3 (or more?) players involved in the betting, one of which has less chips than the other bettors and has gone all-in and been called by the other 2 (or more?) bettors. This leaves a locked main pot in front of the player who went all-in and the remaining bettors still have chips so are able to keep betting if they wish.

Some schools of thought suggest it is good etiquette for the remaining 2 (or more?) bettors to just keep checking until the river.

Other schools of thought suggest this to be ridiculous.


At this point in time I'm firmly in the 'get stuffed, I'll bet if I want to' category

I Have not read this entire thread but i though i would still just post my general understanding of this topic.

It is considered poor form to bet into a dry side pot. The reason being that if you are for example on a final table, two opponents versus and ALL-IN is better than one, especially if say the prize money jumps $100,000 once the ALL-IN player in eliminated.

On the other hand, it is poor form to to check down and ALL-IN player. It does border on colusion ever so slightly. Generally it is standard that if player A is ALL-IN and player B flops the nuts then player B would minimum bet to option opponent C to fold.

It is a very simple unofficial rule... many players do not understand this but then again, many players see this rule from this perspective....

Player A - ALL-IN with 5/5
Player B calls with JK
Player C calls with AK

Flop comes J,10,6

Player B bets (does not have the nuts, but top pair)
Player C folds....

Turn comes A
River comes A

Players B wins the Pot, eliminates player A and Player C folded the Best hand.

If player B had checked down the pot, they would have lost. Instead after being awarded the pot they have more chips and are in a better position. Plus after betting into the dry side pot they are better of heads up, or they can win more money....

So options are there and you must understand that not all players share the brain set check down to eliminate the short stack,

if you hit top pair then in my opinion, bet away, it is likely that you have the best hand at that point. if the other player calls, then it is not a try side pot any more.

but i think if you have Ace high or king high or something, its worth checking it down, as the other player will probably fold bottom pair to your bet, and give the all-in player a chance at winning.

yeah ben i agree, if i end up floping a draw or have high card more than happy to check, but pairs ill bet into it. i dont really see whats so wrong with that.
