It is quickly proving to be a popular event on the 888PL calendar, and it is with no surprise that we saw hundreds of runners all participating in the 888PL Online Championships over the weekend! Six coveted bracelets were up for grabs in a variety of events held on the 2nd and 3rd of July. In a new twist to the series, we held the Main Event as a standalone tournament on the Sunday which proved to be very beneficial to the players, allowing a goods nights rest after the action packed Saturday where five bracelets were awarded.
Red Bull at the ready, it was 113 players who entered the opening $11 Deepstack event, all prepared for a long day of poker. It was South Australian Tournament Captain Eric “chaseberger” Lao who emerged to the top of the pack early to claim the first 888PL Bracelet of the day. A special mention to 888PL forum regulars Scott Murrin, Mike Subacius, and Jo McDonald who all made deep runs.
Up next was the $5.50 6max tournament, a favourite amongst many as indicated by the strong 109 player field. Well known Victorian and South Australian 888PL player’s Trishan “nplking” and Phil “Sinister” Lambert came close to victory (2nd and 3rd respectively), however, it was Geoff “G.Frenock” McDonald who soared trough the final table on his way to a victory and $160 in prize money.
The third event on the calendar was the unique Heads Up event.66 players fronted the $11 entry fee to battle it out. Jim “jimtrave” Travers from Victoria took this one out and claims the third bracelet of the day. Once again Trishan Naidoo made another deep run, but could not close and would have to settle for another second.
After the introduction of the Nightly Pot Limit Omaha Freeroll, the popularity of this format has grown considerably amongst the 888PL community. The PLO event had a great 64 player turnout who fronted the $5.50 entry fee. It was South Australian Mark “mlp666” Page who dominated the field to secure his first 888PL Online Champs Bracelet.
The last event of the Saturday was the $55 High Rollers. This event attracted 58 runners all aiming for the bracelet and the $870 first prize. The final table played host to a number of well known names in the community, but it was Andrew BigBlkTriton” who capitalised on his recent success on the Australian poker scene and managed to charge through the field to claim first place. South Australian’s dominated this final table taking 8 of the 9 seats, and it was up to well known lone Victorian Gayle “queenoftarts” Andrews to carry the State, however, it wasn’t meant to be as she bowed out in 8th place.
After a much needed rest, players were refreshed and ready for the Main Event which began on Sunday afternoon. A different approach to the Online Champs weekend, it proved to be a successful one, with 108 players registering into the $30 event, all vying for a piece of the $2000 prize pool. A dominant force in the 888PL circle it was Scott “IpumpFishies” Murrin who must be congratulated for Final Tabling his ninth Bracelet event. Also joining him was 888PL Victorian Operations Manager Michael “Ratty_” Ratnik, who would go on to win the event and scoop $875 in winnings.
