ok guys. in the spirit of garth wanting more hand discussion on the forum, i have decided to come up with a question. i might come up with more of these, along the same lines as the study group idea that i had, but it wont be formalised just yet.
YOU ARE NOT ALLOWED TO ANSWER THIS QUESTION IF YOU HAVE MORE THAN 800 POSTS. or if you think this is really easy, hold off on posting until a few others have posted.
you might have to do a bit of work (like 5 mins), but i think its a good exercise.
what you will need:
pokerstove - google and download
alternatively, you can use the card player odds calculator http://www.cardplayer.com/poker-tools/o ... xas-holdem
skills you will learn:
how to calculate pot odds
what implied odds are.
best response will win $1 in 888 money from me. if there is a really good response to this thread i might give out bonus money. but this is primarily done as an exercise for those that might need to brush up on some of these things.
recap:
effective stacks are 100k. i.e they really big compared with the size of the pot, and are irrelevant.
opponent raises from middle position to 2400, blinds are 300/600.
we call on the button, the blinds fold.
we have [js] [ts]
opponent has ??
board is [6c] [7h] [9d]
the opponent bets 1200 into the pot of 5700
i am expecting at least a sentence on each of these questions, as well as your working out.
1.what are pot odds in general terms? what direct pot odds are we getting here? (maths question)
2. what is our percentage chance of having a better hand on the turn/river, if our opponent has a) [ac] [ah] b) [9h] [2c] c) [9h] [9c](use pokerstove or odds calculator)
3. what are the minimum odds we require in each of the above cases (hint: turn the above percentage into a pot odds number).
4. are we getting the correct odds if our opponent has either of the 2 hands above.
5. give me a short sentence on implied odds. comment on the significance of implied odds in this case. how does the board texture affect implied odds.
if you want to ask any questions feel free.
i really hope that some of you guys will take the time to go through the questions and answer them. this will either be really good or really crap.

also, if anyone else flames someone's answers to these questions, i will be asking the mods for an instant ban.
please do not comment on other people's answers until you have come up with your own.
if you are not 100% confident in your answers, and you want them posted anonymously, then pm them to me, and i will post them for you without your name.
the idea is to learn something, not have a go at others for being wrong. (i freely admit i have been guilty of this in the past)

Ok I know I have more than 800 posts (slightly) but I like this. And seeings I witnessed this hand live and the dribble sprouted by other players at the table about odds etc during this and other hands, I'm keen to have a crack at this exercise.
Will look at it when I get home. I'm really trying to learn how to calculate odds at the moment and this is a great practical lesson.
Cheers benny the cunt.

Cheers benny the cunt.
this is more general than the specific hand discussion that i posted elsewhere - the results of that other hand that i posted are irrelevant to this thread.
but there are some concepts that are relevant, and that hand was a good example i think.
also, if you want to answer the question, you can, but can you please dont post it until some of the other less regular posters have done so.
or if you like, you can pm it to me.

benny the cunt i know you have posted stack/bet details in the other thread, but if you look at this one by itself then you can't work out pot odds etc without bet/pot sizes etc. Cant really comment on implied odds either without effective stack sizes either.

good point, ill edit the bet/pot size.
with regards to implied odds, i am after a general discussion with reference to the type of board.
thanks for that matthew.
i have edited the OP to reflect this.

old blinds were better - sets up a better implied odds discussion (i wont say why though).
