Having just played at the metro North finals I think a shake up is needed.
off 150 players who qualified only 42, or 28%,turned up. Poor considering there was money available.
I am sure everyone has ideas but here is mine.
At the regional finals first of all top 5 qualify for the state.
At the regionals no one wins any money but the top 3 get to represent their region at the state finals.
An hour and a hour before the state finals there are three tables set up with one representative from each region on each table.
To try and get a region rivalary going you are playing for your region rather than yourself.
1st place gets 10pts, 2nd place 9pts etc.
The region thats accumulates the most points wins.
$3000 for 1st place ($1000 each player)
$1500 for 2nd place
$600 for 3rd place.
Just an idea.
Thanks
people will be already travelling to the state final so why not go early and cheer on your state.

Re: Regional Final Format
Hi Sunbury 2,
As of 2009, all regional finals have been "canned".
Also there is a regional teams event, we are actually playing one for season 5. Top 10 on each regional leaderboard qualify to represent their region in a $2,000 teams tournament.
Obviously the changes to 2009 have not been communicated to you fully, I will take this up with our Sunbury TD's.

thank you
I can only go on the Metro North Final which was a poor turn out.
42 players out of 150 turned up, but started with only 5 tables as 2 had disappeared by time it started.
Stacks were increased to about 3000 I think.
Drinks cards didn't play a part.
Unsure why turn out was so poor, but obviously Garth is right in needing to change the format if players not turning up even though they have spent 10 weeks qualifying.

Hi Sunbury 2 ... I have had a few conversations with players prior to the event, some wanting me to help them find the list of qualifiers on the net. it was not as easy to find this time as it was not attached to the information for the event like it usually is ... so I really had to go searching.
My take on this regional was the fact that it was in the middle of the school holidays, and perhaps some people are still away, apart from those who could not find the list, did not know if they made it, so did not go. But I was shocked to see the low numbers.
Just a suggestion, perhaps on the npl website, there could be another tab added that contains these lists for each region - that came from another player who does not find the forum 'user friendly' ... lol.... the thing is that there are always going to be qualifiers lists for something, especially with the new formats for 2009. so maybe this is a good suggestion, only Garth would know if it will work or not ...
back to the regional final, did you guys start with 3000? are u sure? what about everyone else, what did you start with and if it is 3000, why was it different for different regions?

Re: thank you

Re: thank you
Regional finals was stuffed!
The texts I scheduled to all qualifiers didn't send.
Not all RM's were aware of the tournament structure and qualification methods and I don't think one region was ran in the same manner as another.
Again this was a communication failure as I believe some of the finals were not run by RM's who were supplied all the information.
To clarify, we decided that if any member of the final table at regionals had not qualified for States then they would gain direct entry.
I think the system for qualifiers is fine at the moment, a news story listing them on the front page of the website works perfectly in my opinion, as well as posting on the forum. We just need to get our TD's trained up to have a public display spreadsheet with them at tournaments, and believe me they all do receive one.
Metro North did suffer the harshest from the lack of communication and numbers were down primarily due to the timing of this event.

Re: Regional Final Format
Hi guys, I've moved the discussion that was in "feedback and suggestions" over to here.
Feedback and suggestions *for the forum* isn't really the place for that conversation
Please continue.

Pardon me, but I think you'll find that's a shovel. See you next Tuesday!

Re: thank you
thanks Garth, for being so honest and forthright. I agree that a newstory on the front, with the list of qualifiers is the best way to go, but the suggestion of a drop down menu was made by a player who found the list was in a main story, with every qualifying list, state and every regional final, all under the one ... usually it is under the newstory for each region.
and for what it's worth, I love the sms idea to get us info quickly ... how about sending an sms that can be responded to - re questions like - how would you like to see npl move forward, or how can npl improve - I saw questions like that last night in another topic ... as we are an sms generation, perhaps that is a good way to get some feedback - and you won't necessarily know who it is from unless you go looking up phone numbers, but you could capture a lot of thoughts from those who are mobile texters as they are a plenty.
you could send out a new question each monday morning and offer a ftt chip if they add their rego number... this may be an incentive.
