South Australia’s NPL Season 5 State Finals
Sunday the 8th of January saw the Parafield Gardens Community Club host one of the best and most exciting State Finals to date.
A combined 534 players ventured to PGCC for a great day of poker in what can only be described as extremely pleasant weather and one of the best set ups to host a finals to date.
Players were very excited by the fact that there was a start stack of T5,000 in chips with twenty minute blind levels in a very relaxed tournament structure.
At the recombine we had just over 100 players remaining and within the hour we had the prize bubble burst and were down to the top 50 remaining players.
At almost 11pm our final table was formalized with the following players and chip counts:
Luke "Jamo" Jamieson 633,000
Emma Alm 521,000
Peter Waters 508,000
Ken Robert 312,000
Ernesto Cozzupoli 226,000
Daniel Booth 202,000
Paul Sparks 156,000
Graeme Curtis 62,000
Matthew "Tank" Bouveng 61,000
Blinds commenced at 20,000/40,000 with a 5,000 ante.
The first hand of the final table saw one of our short stacks eliminated when the following hand played out:
Matthew "Tank" Bouveng is in the BB and Ernesto limps in middle position, action folds to Tank in the BB who moves all in. Ernesto makes the call and the players table their hands.
Tank rolls 5s 6c up against Ernesto’s Qc8c.
The board runs out 4x, Ax, Jx, Ax, J; and Tank is eliminated in 9th position.
Paul Sparks was the next player to fall by the way side when he moved all in over the top of Peter Waters pre flop raise. Peter made the call and was found to be a long way behind Paul Sparks’ AK with Peter holding a clearly dominated AT.
Unfortunately Paul looked home and hosed on a board of 5x, 2x, 5x, Jx until the river bought the disastrous ten and Paul was sent to the rail at the end of a very bad beat.
Our remaining female competitor, Emma Alm, eliminated Ken Roberts a few hand later when she moved all in over the top of Ken’s raise holding As, Ac. Ken called and found himself in dire straits holding Ah 6h. Unfortunately the board bricked out for Ken and sent him to the spectator stands in 6th place.
Ernesto was the next to go when Luke “Jamo” raises to 180,000 from the button preflop and Ernesto makes the call in the BB. The flop fell Kc, 6s, 6h and Ernesto moves all in and is called by Luke.
Luke is a long way behind the pocket 7’s of Ernesto holding just As 7h but the turn quickly changed the lead when it bought the Ah and had Ernesto drawing for the case 7. The miraculous one outer did not land and Ernesto was eliminated in 5th position.
Luke was proving to be very aggressive at this stage and another elimination happened in a very short time span when Luke raised from the button again to 200,000 and Peter Walters moves all in from the BB. Luke snap calls and this time he is the slight favorite holding Ad, 8h to Peter’s Kc, Qh.
The board produced no paint for Peter but it did give Luke a pair of 8’s and Peter finished up in fourth position.
Reaching three handed we find the players with the following chip counts:
Emma Alm - 175,000
Boothy - 1,295,000
Jam0 - 1,215,000
Emma, who was crippled a few hands earlier, is soon eliminated when she moved all in holding 5h,5s and finds a caller in Jamo yet again who had her clearly dominated holding 6s, 6d. The board bought no hope for Emma and left the tournament as last female standing and $2,200 richer.
The heads up battle was thought to be an epic struggle and something everyone was looking forward to watching with:
Luke “Jamo” Jamieson - Berri Deepstack Runner up - 1.4 Million
Daniel Booth - 2008 Adelaide Champs main event winner - 1,285,000.
Unfortunately Luke’s aggression would prove his undoing when he moved all in from the button, on the very first hand of heads up, holding Tc, 2d and found an instant call from Daniel Booth holding As, Ad. The board bought some hope for Jamo when it fell 6s, 5s, Jh, Ts meaning Luke needed to see a deuce or a ten on the river to seal his victory. The river fell the 5h and Luke is crippled.
Another few hands were played out with Luke moving all in almost every hand until again he moved all in from the button holding 9d, 7s only to find himself running into another of Daniel’s monsters who was holding the Kh, Ks.
The flop bought a gutshot for Luke with the Ah, Ts, 6h and the turn bought even more outs when it fell the 9c but the river dropped the 6s and Daniel Booth can add another trophy to his collection and $10,000 to his six figure poker winnings thus far.
Congratulations to Daniel Booth on another fine performance and another title to add to his list.
I would also like to add my thanks to Greg and all of the staff at Parafield Gardens Community Club for being fantastic hosts and providing such a great venue and atmosphere.
Well done to all of our qualifiers and good luck for this season.
