Skycity Satellites - Quality of play

I played in the 2nd event this afternoon & had a great time. Congrats again to the NPL staff & management as well as Skycity for putting on a great day. I finished about 20th after taking a pretty big hit earlier when I folded AJ while involved with a massive pot after being re-raised with an Ace on the board. I folded & he showed AQ so I was out-kicked, so I guess I should be happy with that play but unfortunately I couldn't recover properly after that.

But...

I must have a little whinge about the quality of some of the play I saw this afternoon. I thought going into today that the standard would be a level above what I see at my local. I haven't played the State Finals before or anything similar due to not being able to play regularly enough so today was all pretty new to me.

I am in no way calling myself a great poker player (yet!! lol :) ) but I do understand the basics & beyond & can't believe the amount of plays I saw with suited carp & Ace rag etc. I also understand that any 2 cards can be played depending on the makeup of the table & position etc but I could only shake my head in disbelief at what I saw today.

Anyhow, well done to the winners & well done again NPL.

There are a few people out there that like to gamble.

Starting hands and positions is one of the things that people may feel comfortable with in regards to their style.

The Loose aggressives play a lot more hands but when they hit they get paid off

The tight aggressives play a lot less hand, but don't get as much action from their top hands.

Apart from that, its good to see you had a good time, well done on the finish.

Welcome to the forums as well.

Being a winner take all tournament you will find that some players will play a lot more "loose" in the hopes of getting a big stack. Folding for the points/money isnt really an option in these kind of tourneys and aggressiveness can pay off.

Cheers Des. I probably didn't really make myself clear. I have no issues with aggressive play with "indifferent" types of hands. I was more referring to one of everyone's pet hates... The calling stations.

eg... blinds are 200/400, chip leader on our table raises to 1500 with high pockets & gets called with 3 4 suited. Caller hits 2 pair on the flop!! Same player kept calling with their Ace rag 3 or 4 times until hitting the Ace on the river with continually calling raises with only Ace high at the time! They made it further than me so I guess I should just STFU!! lol

As people say... "That's Poker"... Just hard to swallow some times...

I was only there for the 1/2 game upstairs, but everything I heard suggested there was a lot of chasing going on downstairs! I suspect it is as Des suggested - winner takes all, no prizes for playing conservative.

Looking forward to my 2 tomorrow! Well, later today anyway :D

Good luck all, wouldn't mind hearing how everyone went.

All they had to do to qualify was to win in a certain month, not actually be any good :)

There's nothing wrong with that at all, it just means that there'll be a certain percentage of players who won on their first night ever and that kind of thing.

6th. Was 2nd chip leader heading into the final table.

Tried to isolate (all-in I went) a pot with JJ when there was a min raise,

got a call from BB (short-ish stack, well covered) with 88 (WOOHOO!), and from AQ (min raiser - had covered, only just), flop comes an 8, river comes a Q (talk about COLD)

GRR! Got the sit I wanted, and wouldn't play it any other way. The guy with AQ had been raising with ATC, especially if they were SUITED (WOW!), really thought he most likely had 1 over card - hopefully I had him dominated with AJ, KJ or something, but meh.

Wasn't knocked out, lasted a few(?) more orbits, but needed to get REALLY lucky, and it just didn't happen.

All-in-all, I saw pretty good poker in flight 4 - fight 3 seemed to have a lot more questionable calls, but that could have just been the table I was at. I certainly didn't play that well.

Thanks to NPL and Sky City - had a great day, and really appreciated the opportunity.
